Radiation-Induced Solid-State Transformations of Uranyl Peroxides

Melissa Fairley et al.

Summary: Single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies of untreated and gamma-irradiated Ca-2[UO2(O-2)(3)]·9H2O show atomic-level changes as the material transitions from crystalline to amorphous with increasing irradiation dose. Irradiation leads to conversion of peroxide groups to hydroxyl groups through interactions with neighboring lattice water molecules. Comparisons of irradiation products of two different uranyl triperoxide monomers provide insights into the influence of Li+ and Ca2+ countercations on the transformation process.

Mechanochemical activation and oxidation of U(iv)O2

Dmytro Kravchuk et al.

Summary: Based on powder X-ray diffraction analysis, solid- and solution-phase vibrational spectroscopy, this study reveals that mechanothermal impact can induce oxidation of U(iv)O-2 and result in the formation of alkali U(vi) triperoxide phases during liquid-assisted grinding.

Solvate-Assisted Grinding: Metal Solvates as Solvent Sources in Mechanochemically Driven Organometallic Reactions

Henry P. DeGroot et al.

Summary: The study explores the impact of solvent removal in synthetic chemistry, showing that mechanochemical initiation can effectively replace the mixing and energy from solvents. The interaction of coordinated solvents with metal centers plays a crucial role in determining the outcome of metathesis reactions, suggesting implications for both mechanochemically driven and solution-based synthesis.

Calorimetric Study of Functionalized Uranyl Peroxide Nanoclusters and Their Monomeric Building Block

Hrafn Traustason et al.

Summary: The study provides a deeper understanding of the behavior of uranyl peroxide nanoclusters through the description of their energy landscape, revealing relationships between the affinity of counter cations and anionic uranyl peroxide units, enthalpy of dissolution, enthalpy of crystallization, and cluster solubility. Additionally, favorable enthalpies of formation for Li-U-24 and Li-U-28 were calculated based on calorimetric measurements of Li-UT.

Mechanochemical synthesis and structural analysis of trivalent lanthanide and uranium diphenylphosphinodiboranates

Taylor V. Fetrow et al.

Summary: Phosphinodiboranates are a class of borohydrides that have limited coordination complexes known with transition metals, lanthanides, and actinides. Mechanochemistry was found to be effective in overcoming the limited solution reactivity of K(H3BPPh2BH3) by exchanging the Bu-t groups attached to phosphorus with R = Ph or H. Despite limitations, mechanochemistry can be used to rapidly synthesize molecular coordination complexes that are difficult to prepare using traditional solution methods.
