COVID-19 associated myocarditis: A systematic review

William Haussner et al.

Summary: COVID-19 can lead to primary acute heart failure from viral myocarditis or Takotsubo cardiomyopathy, with similar incidence. The main difference between COVID-19-associated myocarditis and respiratory failure is the presence of an early shock state.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic is associated with significant cardiovascular involvement, with common cardiovascular histopathological findings reported in autopsied hearts. However, the true prevalence of conditions such as myocarditis may be lower than initially thought. Further research is needed to clarify the exact impact of COVID-19 on cardiovascular health.

Dysregulation of miR-342-3p in plasma exosomes derived from convalescent AMI patients and its consequences on cardiac repair

Bo Wang et al.

Summary: Plasma exosomes derived from convalescent AMI patients showed impaired ability to repair damaged cardiomyocytes compared to those from healthy controls, potentially due to dysregulation of miR-342-3p. The study also revealed that miR-342-3p promoted exosome-mediated heart repair by targeting SOX6 and TFEB to inhibit cardiomyocyte apoptosis and autophagy. These findings provide insights into the role of plasma exosomes in cardiac repair after AMI and suggest potential therapeutic strategies.

A molecular single-cell lung atlas of lethal COVID-19

Johannes C. Melms et al.

Summary: Single-nucleus RNA sequencing of lung tissues from individuals who died of COVID-19 revealed a highly inflamed lung environment with impaired T cell responses and failed transition of alveolar type 2 cells. Additionally, expansion of pathological fibroblasts contributing to rapidly ensuing pulmonary fibrosis in COVID-19 was identified as a unique feature compared to other causes of pneumonia.

Presence of SARS-CoV-2 Nucleoprotein in Cardiac Tissues of Donors with Negative COVID-19 Molecular Tests

Gianluca Lorenzo Perrucci et al.

Summary: This study investigated the presence of SARS-CoV-2 in cardiac tissues obtained from donors in Lombardy, Italy, and found that while viral RNA was not detected in the donors, variable levels of viral nucleoprotein signal were present in some tissues, suggesting caution and further investigations on implantable tissue specimens collected during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Echocardiographic Characteristics and Outcome in Patients With COVID-19 Infection and Underlying Cardiovascular Disease

Yuman Li et al.

Summary: Patients with COVID-19 infection and underlying CVD showed impaired LV diastolic and RV function, with RV dysfunction being the most common, particularly associated with elevated hs-TNI levels and the need for mechanical ventilation therapy, while LV systolic or diastolic function was relatively normal. The parameters of RV function were predictive of higher mortality in these patients.

Extracellular vesicles from thalassemia patients carry iron-containing ferritin and hemichrome that promote cardiac cell proliferation

Anyapat Atipimonpat et al.

Summary: Extracellular vesicles from beta-thal patients may contain iron-load proteins that lead to the induction of cardiac cell proliferation. While both normal and thal patients' microparticles promoted cardiac cell proliferation, only exosomes from thal patients had this effect. Additionally, exosomes from thal patients with iron overload potentially induce higher cardiac cell proliferation and angiogenesis compared to those without iron overload and normal controls.

Development of alveolar and airway cells from human iPS cells: toward SARS-CoV-2 research and drug toxicity testing

Kayoko Tsuji et al.

Summary: This study generated ATII and club cells from human induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs) for SARS-CoV-2 infection and drug testing, providing a useful in vitro model for drug development. The differentiated cells expressing ACE2 and TMPRSS2 were infected with SARS-CoV-2, and treatments with Remdesivir and bleomycin showed promising results in inhibiting viral replication and inducing cytotoxicity. These findings suggest the hiPSC-derived AT2 and club cells are valuable tools for studying COVID-19 pathogenesis and drug development.

HIF-1α promotes SARS-CoV-2 infection and aggravates inflammatory responses to COVID-19

Mingfu Tian et al.

Summary: The cytokine storm induced by SARS-CoV-2 is a major pathological feature of COVID-19, with HIF-1α and pro-inflammatory cytokines playing key roles in infection and inflammatory responses. The production of HIF-1α, inflammatory responses, and high mortalities in elderly patients indicate its crucial role in exacerbating COVID-19.
