Encapsulation of cellulose nanocrystals into acrylic latex particles via miniemulsion polymerization

Ezgi M. Dogan-Guner et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the encapsulation of cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) in acrylic particles through miniemulsion polymerization, utilizing costabilizer, water soluble initiator, and comonomer mixtures. Functionalized CNCs were successfully incorporated while unmodified CNCs were located outside the formed latex particles. It highlights the challenge of using polar and reactive surface modifiers for CNCs in polymerization.

Monomer Transport in Emulsion Polymerization III Terpolymerization and Starved-Feed Polymerization

F. Joseph Schork

Summary: This article presents a simple mathematical model for studying the transport of monomers in batch emulsion homopolymerization. The Damkohler number is introduced to describe the monomer transport and is calculated for common monomers. Furthermore, the analysis is extended to batch binary copolymerization, as well as more industrially relevant cases of batch terpolymerization, starved-feed copolymerization, and the combination of the two.

Monomer Concentration in Polymer Particles in Emulsion Polymerization

F. Joseph Schork

Summary: The rate of emulsion polymerization is influenced by the monomer concentration at the locus of polymerization in the polymer particles. This note provides a shortcut method for specifying monomer concentration for new monomers or those without thermodynamic swelling data. When described in terms of volume fraction monomer, the variance in monomer concentration in polymer particles is much smaller, with an average volume fraction monomer of 0.67 +/- 0.04 for ten monomers based on experimental values.

Monomer Transport in Emulsion Polymerization II: Copolymerization

F. Joseph Schork

Summary: The method of evaluating the Damkohler number for monomer transport in emulsion homopolymerization has been extended to copolymerization. It is found that monomers not limited by monomer transport in homopolymerization may become more limited in binary copolymerization, while monomers limited by monomer transport in homopolymerization may become less limited in binary copolymerization.
