Utilising Incipient Slip for Grasping Automation in Robot Assisted Surgery

Ian Waters et al.

Summary: Despite recent advances in surgical robotic systems, the limited ability to control grasp force remains a challenge. In this study, a force control strategy based on detecting incipient slip was investigated. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of sensing incipient slip and show that this approach can achieve equivalent grasping performance while reducing tissue loading and risk of trauma. This has important implications for the development of automated surgical robots with adaptive grasp force control.
