On the Near-Field Spherical Wave Formation in Resonant Leaky-Wave Antennas: Application to Small Lens Design

Sjoerd Bosma et al.

Summary: In this work, the authors demonstrate that the near field of leaky-wave resonant antennas radiating into a dense medium can be accurately represented as a spherical wave in a certain solid angle around broadside. They also find that the shadow boundary angle can be used to define the phase center and geometry of a truncated lens that couples well to leaky-wave antennas. The proposed design and analysis methodology is validated through the evaluation of aperture efficiency and radiation patterns of small-to-medium sized lenses in reception.

Wideband Multimode Leaky-Wave Feed for Scanning Lens-Phased Array at Submillimeter Wavelengths

Maria Alonso-delPino et al.

Summary: This study proposes a hybrid electromechanical scanning lens antenna array architecture for steering highly directive beams at submillimeter wavelengths, combining electronic phase shifting of a sparse array with mechanical translation of a lens array. Additionally, a novel leaky wave lens feed concept is implemented for achieving wide bandwidth and large steering angles in the antenna system.
