Energetic constraints drive sex-specific parental care in the monomorphic Leach's storm-petrel Hydrobates leucorhous

Chris W. Tyson et al.

Summary: This study examined sex-specific provisioning in the monomorphic Leach's storm-petrel and found that males provisioned more frequently and made a larger overall contribution to chick feeding than females. Females showed more variable trip durations, suggesting they alternated between short, energetically taxing trips for chick care and longer recovery trips for self-care. These findings suggest that energetic constraints on females lead to male-biased, sex-specific provisioning in monomorphic species.

Foraging Paths of Breeding Leach's Storm-Petrels in Relation to Offshore Oil Platforms, Breeding Stage, and Year

Sydney M. Collins et al.

Summary: The global population of Leach's Storm-Petrels has declined substantially in recent decades, with the species facing threats from anthropogenic light attraction and oil platforms. Conservation research should focus on risks during migration and winter, as well as on juveniles and immature birds.

The effects of food supply on reproductive hormones and timing of reproduction in an income-breeding seabird

Shannon Whelan et al.

Summary: The current study investigated the relationship between food supply, energy balance, and the timing of breeding in income-breeding animals. Results showed that increased food supply advanced endocrine and laying phenology, while net energy balance had little impact on energy reserves.

Sexual segregation in the foraging behaviour of a slightly dimorphic seabird: Influence of the environment and fishery activity

Jose Manuel Reyes-Gonzalez et al.

Summary: This study investigated sexual differences in foraging strategies of Scopoli's shearwater, finding that females show greater foraging effort, lower fishery attendance, lower trophic level, and narrower isotopic niche width than males. Environmental conditions influence space use, feeding resources, and fishery attendance differently in males and females, with both sexes showing lower fishery attendance and increased foraging effort in years with unfavorable conditions.
