Mapping groundwater recharge in Africa from ground observations and implications for water security

Alan M. MacDonald et al.

Summary: Groundwater recharge rates in Africa were quantified for the period 1970-2019, revealing measurable recharge in most environments but lower rates in arid and semi-arid regions. The study found that only LTA rainfall is significantly related to LTA recharge at the continental scale, while other factors are important at local scales. The dataset provides valuable information for assessing groundwater development potential and water security in Africa.

Nitrate source apportionment in the complex Nyando tropical river basin in Kenya

Benjamin Nyilitya et al.

Summary: This study identified the main sources of nitrate in the Nyando River basin of Kenya and emphasized the importance of optimizing animal manure use, land conservation measures, and improving sanitation systems to control excess nitrate discharge. Multiple methods, including hydrochemistry, stable isotopes, and a Bayesian mixing model, were used to determine nitrate sources and their spatial-temporal variation in the basin, revealing the significance of manure and sewage as leading sources of nitrate input.

Environmental tracers to evaluate groundwater residence times and water quality risk in shallow unconfined aquifers in sub Saharan Africa

Eddie W. Banks et al.

Summary: Groundwater is a crucial water resource for rural communities in sub-Saharan Africa, but understanding its sustainability and vulnerability is increasingly important with growing development. Research in Ethiopia, Uganda, and Malawi indicates recharge rates of 30-330 mm y(-1), suggesting sustainable abstraction from low-yielding hand pumped boreholes. However, E. coli contamination at some sites highlights the need for improved well construction to safeguard water quality.

Global patterns of nitrate isotope composition in rivers and adjacent aquifers reveal reactive nitrogen cascading

Ioannis Matiatos et al.

Summary: The isotopic data of nitrate in global rivers and shallow aquifers reveal differences in nitrate concentrations and nitrogen isotope composition between the two water bodies. Water temperature plays a role in affecting the isotopic composition of nitrate, with waste-related nitrogen source signals being more prominent in colder seasons. Isotopic assays are crucial for understanding nitrate pollution and informing effective agricultural and land management strategies.
