Perineuronal nets in HVC and plasticity in male canary song

Gilles Cornez et al.

Summary: Studies have shown that the presence of PNN in the song control nuclei of adult canaries is not necessary to maintain the general features of crystallized song. Though there are indications that PNN may be implicated in the stability of song repertoires, further research is needed to confirm this hypothesis. It is suggested that PNN may play a role in sensorimotor learning and song crystallization in songbirds, but may not be crucial once the song has been crystallized.

The Gene Expression Profile of the Song Control Nucleus HVC Shows Sex Specificity, Hormone Responsiveness, and Species Specificity Among Songbirds

Meng-Ching Ko et al.

Summary: Singing occurs in both male and female songbirds, with persistent sex differences in gene expression levels in the brain nucleus critical for song pattern generation. Androgen levels and sex are the predominant variables associated with variations in the HVC transcriptomes, with considerable differences observed between natural and testosterone-induced singing. Strong transcriptional changes in the HVC are detected during the transition from non-singing to singing, showing potential functional convergences between sex-specific genes of singing females and males.
