In vino veritas, in aqua lucrum: Farmland investment, environmental uncertainty, and groundwater access in California's Cuyama Valley

Madeleine Fairbairn et al.

Summary: This paper examines how farmland investors turn environmental uncertainty into an advantage, exploiting both temporal uncertainties associated with resource management under climate change and spatial uncertainties inherent to all subsurface resources. The case study reveals that investors assert their preferred land imaginaries and improve property values through participation in groundwater governance and the establishment of water-related infrastructure. Material and legal uncertainties of groundwater access provide a potentially lucrative opening for investors to leverage in farmland investment.

Hollowed out Heartland, USA: How capital sacrificed communities and paved the way for authoritarian populism

Marc Edelman

Summary: The article emphasizes that community prosperity depends on the ability to appropriate the wealth they produce and whether institutions make people's lives meaningful. It points out that rural decline is rooted in economic restructuring and financialization, exacerbating racial resentment and paving the way for authoritarian politics. The importance of a multidimensional approach to analyzing long-term and recent trends affecting economy, institutions, health, and community life is highlighted.
