Optimum growth temperature declines with body size within fish species

Max Lindmark et al.

Summary: According to the temperature-size rule, warming of aquatic ecosystems is predicted to increase individual growth rates while reducing body sizes of ectotherms. However, there is a lack of comprehensive understanding of how growth and key processes such as consumption and metabolism are affected by temperature and body mass within species. This study conducted a systematic review and compiled experimental data on fishes to examine the combined effects of body size and temperature on growth. The findings suggest that maximum consumption increases slower with body mass compared to metabolism and that optimum growth temperatures decline with body size. These findings are important for advancing mechanistic models of individual growth and food web dynamics and improving our understanding of the impacts of climate warming on aquatic ectotherms.

Multidecadal changes in fish growth rates estimated from tagging data: A case study from the Eastern Baltic cod (Gadus morhua, Gadidae)

Monica Mion et al.

Summary: This study used tagging data to analyze the growth changes of Eastern Baltic cod and found significant variations in growth rates over the past decades, with the current growth being the lowest observed in the past 70 years, indicating very low productivity. This study demonstrates the potential of using tagging data to estimate long-term changes in growth rates in wild fish, with implications for other species facing age-determination challenges.

Bigger juveniles and smaller adults: Changes in fish size correlate with warming seas

Idongesit E. Ikpewe et al.

Summary: The study found that as sea temperatures increase, the body size of demersal fish species decrease, while the size of juveniles increase, resulting in smaller adult fish. These changes are closely correlated with rising sea temperatures, providing empirical evidence that global warming is impacting the body size of commercial fish species.

Disentangling diverse responses to climate change among global marine ecosystem models

Ryan F. Heneghan et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impacts of climate change on marine ecosystem models, revealing the diversity of responses to changes in temperature and lower trophic levels. The results highlight the lack of theoretical clarity on representing fundamental ecological mechanisms and emphasize the need to better understand the two-way coupling between lower trophic level organisms and consumers in global marine ecosystem modeling.

Next-generation ensemble projections reveal higher climate risks for marine ecosystems

Derek P. Tittensor et al.

Summary: The use of enhanced marine ecosystem models and Earth system model outputs from CMIP6 reveals a greater decline in mean global ocean animal biomass than previously projected under both strong-mitigation and high-emissions scenarios. Climate change impacts are expected to lead to long-term declines in global marine animal biomass and unevenly distributed impacts on fisheries. The new ensemble ecosystem simulations show a greater decline in mean global ocean animal biomass under both strong-mitigation and high-emissions scenarios due to elevated warming, highlighting the need to reduce uncertainty in projected responses of marine ecosystems to climate change.
