Climate model experiments on the 4.2 ka event: The impact of tropical sea-surface temperature anomalies and desertification

Hans Renssen

Summary: In this study, climate model experiments were conducted to investigate the causal mechanism of the 4.2 ka event, one of the most prominent climate events of the Holocene. The results suggest that tropical sea surface temperature anomalies, along with ongoing desertification in Northern Africa and Arabia, played a significant role in causing the event. This led to drying in North Africa, decreased precipitation in South Asia and East Africa, and increased precipitation in South America and northwest North America.

Additional multi-proxy stalagmite evidence from northeast Namibia supports recent models of wetter conditions during the 4.2 ka Event in the Southern Hemisphere

L. Bruce Railsback et al.

Summary: Based on new observations from Dante Cave in Namibia, this study suggests that the 4.2 ka Event may have had wetter conditions rather than drier conditions. These findings are consistent with observations and modeling results from other locations, indicating increased moisture in the Southern Hemisphere. The authors propose that the event was a response to the southward migration of the Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone as a result of cooling in the Northern Hemisphere.

Significant weak monsoon events during the early to middle Holocene transition: Pollen evidence from an alpine lake in North China

Shengrui Zhang et al.

Summary: This study examines the response characteristics of East Asian summer monsoon (EASM) precipitation to abrupt climatic events during the early to middle Holocene transition. The results suggest that weak monsoon events recorded in North China were related to the 8.2 ka event in the North Atlantic region, possibly caused by the collapse of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) and the southward shift of the intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ).

Holocene variability of East Asian summer monsoon as viewed from the speleothem δ18O records in central China

Yanjun Cai et al.

Summary: The study investigates the monsoon precipitation in East China and its connection with the East Asian summer monsoon. Through analyzing stalagmites from Magou Cave in Central China, the research uncovers long-term trends in precipitation delta O-18 and highlights the dominance of East Asian summer monsoon intensity. The findings suggest a potential role of tropical sea surface temperature oscillations in influencing weak monsoon events.

Collapse of the Liangzhu and other Neolithic cultures in the lower Yangtze region in response to climate change

Haiwei Zhang et al.

Summary: The Liangzhu culture in the Yangtze River Delta collapsed around 4300 years ago due to a short period of anomalously wet climate, with large-scale flooding causing the abandonment of the ancient city. Subsequent arid conditions further contributed to the demise of Neolithic cultures in the region. Major hydroclimatic changes between 4300 and 3000 years ago may have been influenced by the increasing frequency of the El Nino-Southern Oscillation in the context of weakened Northern Hemisphere summer insolation.

Interannual and decadal covariabilities in East Asian and Western North Pacific summer rainfall for 1979-2016

Seogyeong Kim et al.

Summary: Understanding the variabilities of East Asian summer rainfall (EASR) and Western North Pacific summer rainfall (WNPSR) is essential for controlling energy and water supply. The study found that interannual variation is dominant in both indices, while decadal variation is more significant in WNPSR than in EASR. This suggests that there are differing mechanisms in adjusting rainfall during monsoon events between decadal and interannual variabilities.
