Glacier surging controls glacier lake formation and outburst floods: The example of the Khurdopin Glacier, Karakoram

Nazir Ahmed Bazai et al.

Summary: This study investigates ice dammed glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs) associated with surge glaciers, focusing on the Khurdopin Glacier in the Karakoram region. The research analyzes seven surge periodical cycles and three surge events using satellite imagery, identifying the importance of surge velocities in controlling conduit development and subsequent GLOFs. A subglacial drainage model was developed to estimate peak discharge timing in GLOF hydrographs, highlighting the dominance of conduit melt enlargement as a drainage process. The study's results suggest that the proposed model could be widely applied for surge-type glaciers worldwide to anticipate ice-dammed lake formation and GLOFs, allowing for timely precautionary measures and reducing downstream damage.

Socio-environmental value of glacier lakes: assessment in the Aosta Valley (Western Italian Alps)

Cristina Viani et al.

Summary: This article presents a methodology for assessing the potential of glacier lakes in the Aosta Valley Region in Italy for socio-environmental development of mountain territories. A total of 337 glacier lakes were identified and evaluated based on parameters related to their geo-environmental value, proximity to human infrastructures and activities, and potential interaction with natural instabilities. Results showed the robustness of the assessment and identified several high-scoring lakes and mountain sectors. The proposed methodology represents an initial step towards the sustainable and integrated management of hot-spot lakes, considering potential risk conditions connected to natural instabilities.

Towards ice-thickness inversion: an evaluation of global digital elevation models (DEMs) in the glacierized Tibetan Plateau

Wenfeng Chen et al.

Summary: Accurate estimation of regional ice thickness is crucial for assessing freshwater resources and sea level rise. This study evaluates the performance of six widely used global-scale digital elevation models (DEMs) for ice thickness modeling over the glacierized Tibetan Plateau, and reveals NASADEM to be the best performer. Comparisons with ICESat-2 laser altimetry data show that NASADEM has the smallest mean error and root mean squared error among the six DEMs.

Increasing glacial lake outburst flood hazard in response to surge glaciers in the Karakoram

Nazir Ahmed Bazai et al.

Summary: Unlike glaciers in other parts of the world, Karakoram glaciers show stable or increasing mass in response to global climate change, leading to the 'Karakoram anomaly'. The region experiences irregular glacier surges that pose a threat of ice dam lake formation and outburst flooding. This study documents 179 GLOFs from 1533 to 2020, predicting future increases in frequency due to glacier surge cycles and anomalous behavior.

Increasing cryospheric hazards in a warming climate

Yongjian Ding et al.

Summary: The cryosphere is an important component of the global climate system and is sensitive to climate warming. Hazards from atmospheric, oceanic, and land cryosphere were summarized, revealing that these hazards may increase in the future due to climate change. The study highlights potential increases in extreme cold events, sea ice decline, glacier collapse, and snowmelt floods as notable impacts of cryospheric changes.

Accelerated mass loss of Himalayan glaciers since the Little Ice Age

Ethan Lee et al.

Summary: Research shows that Himalayan glaciers have lost a significant amount of ice over the past few centuries, with rates one order of magnitude lower than contemporary rates. The loss of ice mass in glaciers is affected by monsoon influence and orographic effects, with the fastest losses occurring in East Nepal and northern Bhutan.

Accelerated global glacier mass loss in the early twenty-first century

Romain Hugonnet et al.

Summary: The study found that glaciers around the world are melting at an accelerated rate, with contrasting patterns of mass loss in different geographical regions. Overall, glaciers are losing mass more rapidly, with similar or even larger acceleration rates than Greenland or Antarctic ice sheets taken separately. These findings also highlight the importance of understanding drivers that influence glacier change to predict future changes and mitigate the impacts of sea-level rise.

Increasing risk of glacial lake outburst floods from future Third Pole deglaciation

Guoxiong Zheng et al.

Summary: Global warming in high-mountain Asia is leading to deglaciation, increasing the risk of natural dam failure and glacial lake outburst floods. The eastern Himalaya currently faces the highest risk, which is expected to almost triple in the future due to further lake development. Collaborative, long-term approaches are urgently needed to mitigate future impacts and promote sustainable development across the Third Pole.

Inventory and evolution of glacial lakes since the Little Ice Age: Lessons from the case of Switzerland

Nico Molg et al.

Summary: The study tracks the evolution of 1192 lakes formed in the deglaciated area since the end of the Little Ice Age over a period of nearly 170 years, noting the majority of lakes are small in size and the fluctuation in numbers at different time periods. Additionally, it was found that approximately 40% of the modeled overdeepened areas eventually became covered by lakes, indicating that incorporating morphological criteria helps in determining the probability of lake formation.

Glacier retreat and associated processes since the Last Glacial Maximum in the Lejiamayu valley, Peruvian Andes

Summary: This study examines glacier retreat and associated processes in the Lejiamayu valley, central Cordillera Blanca, Peru. Glacier extent during the Last Glacial Maximum, Antarctic Cold Reversal, and Little Ice Age was reconstructed, showing a significant reduction since the end of the Little Ice Age. The potential future volume of a new glacial lake forming in the valley was estimated, indicating that previous estimates of future lake volume may have been underestimated.
