The Critical Role of Spreading Depolarizations in Early Brain Injury: Consensus and Contention

R. David Andrew et al.

Summary: In this review, the mechanism and impact of spreading depolarization (SD) in the gray matter following blood flow loss are discussed. The initiation and propagation of SD are explored, along with the challenges and pitfalls in studying SD. The review concludes with a summary of the research direction and ongoing debates regarding SD.

Contusion Progression Following Traumatic Brain Injury: A Review of Clinical and Radiological Predictors, and Influence on Outcome

Krishma Adatia et al.

Summary: Secondary injuries play a significant role in the morbidity and mortality of patients with traumatic brain injury. The progression of cerebral contusions can lead to clinical deterioration and the need for surgical intervention, but predicting this progression remains challenging. Recent studies have focused on identifying factors that can help predict contusion progression and its impact on clinical outcomes.

Molecular mechanisms of brain water transport

Nanna MacAulay

Summary: Our brains consist of 80% water, which is continuously shifted between different compartments and cell types during physiological and pathophysiological processes. Disturbances in brain water homeostasis occur with pathologies such as brain oedema and hydrocephalus. Although aquaporins greatly accelerate the movement of water, they do not suffice to explain overall brain water movement, suggesting the presence of unknown molecular mechanisms.

Hypoxia-induced depression of synaptic transmission becomes irreversible by intracellular accumulation of non-excitatory amino acids

Iris Alvarez-Merz et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that the application of an amino acid mixture at physiological concentrations can lead to cell swelling and affect synaptic function. Specifically, the amino acids in Plasma1 accumulate intracellularly and induce synaptic potentiation.
