Assessment of oral health in older adults by non-dental professional caregivers-development and validation of a photograph-supported oral health-related section for the interRAI suite of instruments

Stefanie Krausch-Hofmann et al.

Summary: An optimized oral health-related section and video training were developed and validated for the interRAI suite of instruments. A study conducted on 260 long-term care residents showed moderate agreement between caregivers and dentists on certain oral health items, but larger discrepancies on others. The psychometric properties of the section were improved compared to previous versions, but further refinement is needed for items based on mouth inspection and caregiver training.

The development and psychometric properties of oral health assessment instruments used by non-dental professionals for nursing home residents: a systematic review

Rojina Thapa et al.

Summary: Globally, the oral health status of elderly residents in nursing homes is poor, highlighting the need for non-dental professionals to be involved in monitoring oral health. This systematic review identified 10 oral health assessment instruments used by non-dental professionals, but found that none provided a comprehensive assessment. Further development of instruments is necessary to address psychometric gaps in oral health assessment.
