Hysteresis parameters and magnetic anisotropy of silicate-hosted magnetite exsolutions

Even S. Nikolaisen et al.

Summary: The anisotropy of remanent magnetization and magnetic susceptibility is predominantly controlled by the mineralogical parameters of the ferrimagnetic fraction in rocks. The study combines 'slice-and-view' FIB nano-tomography data analysis with micromagnetic modeling and single crystal hysteresis measurements to provide insights into the complex interaction between magnetization structure, shape, and crystallographic relations in natural magnetic particles. Magnetic modeling of natural magnetic particles is essential to extract anisotropic hysteresis parameters directly from the primary remanence carriers.

Discovery of giant magnetofossils within and outside of the Palaeocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum in the North Atlantic

Pengfei Xue et al.

Summary: The origin of giant magnetofossils has remained a mystery due to the absence of modern analogues. This study discovered abundant giant magnetofossils in North Atlantic marine sediments, not only during the Palaeocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum but also before and after this period. The findings suggest that giant biogenic magnetite crystals were not exclusively produced during ancient hyperthermal events.

Bending and Collapse: Magnetic Recording Fidelity of Magnetofossils From Micromagnetic Simulation

Zhaowen Pei et al.

Summary: Magnetosome chains produced by magnetotactic bacteria are important for paleoenvironmental and paleomagnetic records, but the in situ structures of these chains in sediments are not known. This study used micromagnetic simulations to quantify the changes in magnetic signals in response to chain deformation. The results showed that bending/collapse leads to a reduction in coercivity and a transition in domain state of the chain. These findings suggest that hysteresis parameters can be used to assess the degree of chain bending/collapse in magnetofossil-rich sediments, and that deformed magnetosome chains in ancient geological materials retain faithful paleomagnetic records.

Magnetotactic Bacterial Activity in the North Pacific Ocean and Its Relationship to Asian Dust Inputs and Primary Productivity Since 8.0 Ma

Qiang Zhang et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that Asian dust delivered iron to stimulate primary productivity and boost magnetotactic bacteria biomineralization in the late Miocene in the North Pacific Ocean. However, since the late Pliocene, dust inputs and primary productivity appear to have been decoupled, with magnetotactic bacteria activity mainly controlled by primary productivity.
