On the Upper-Ocean Vertical Eddy Heat Transport in the Kuroshio Extension. Part I: Variability and Dynamics

Peiran Yang et al.

Summary: Oceanic eddies play a crucial role in transferring heat from the subsurface to the surface ocean. This study simulated the winter heat transport Q(T) in the Kuroshio Extension and derived an omega equation to decompose the contribution of Q(T) from different dynamics. It was found that geostrophic deformation and vertical mixing of momentum are the major processes generating Q(T) in the mixed layer.

Four Types of Baroclinic Instability Waves in the Global Oceans and the Implications for the Vertical Structure of Mesoscale Eddies

Ling Feng et al.

Summary: Linear stability analysis is conducted to understand the geostrophic distribution of different types of baroclinic instability in the global oceans, their correspondence to observed mesoscale eddies, and properties of instability waves. Four principal types of baroclinic instability are identified, exhibiting large-scale patterns globally. The instability waves show uniform propagation properties in specific regions and resemble normal mode Rossby waves, with propagation speeds influenced by mean flows relevant to the instability types.
