Thermal impact of Heinrich stadials in cave temperature and speleothem oxygen isotope records

David Dominguez-Villar et al.

Summary: A one-dimensional thermal conduction model was developed to study the temperature changes in caves during Heinrich stadials, showing that thermal anomalies are attenuated and lag time increases with depth. The model also suggests that temperature changes associated with Heinrich stadials can significantly affect speleothem isotope variability.

Clumped isotope analysis of lacustrine endogenic carbonates and implications for paleo-temperature reconstruction: A case study from Dali Lake

Jiaojiao Yue et al.

Summary: The study investigated the removal of contamination from lacustrine endogenic carbonates prior to clumped isotope analysis using hydrogen peroxide. Results showed that reacting with 3% hydrogen peroxide for 8 hours was suggested to be the optimal condition for removing contaminants from the samples. This pretreatment procedure allowed for reasonable Delta(47) temperature changes during the last deglaciation and revealed a temperature decrease of about 6 degrees C in Northern China during the Younger Dryas period, highlighting the potential of applying carbonate clumped isotope thermometry to lacustrine carbonates for future paleo-temperature and paleo-elevation reconstructions.

Penultimate deglaciation Asian monsoon response to North Atlantic circulation collapse

Summary: A study from the United States found that during the end of the ice age, massive iceberg discharges and meltwater pulses in the North Atlantic led to a shutdown of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation, causing dramatic changes in East Asian and Indian monsoon rainfall.

Influences of temperature and the meteoric water δ18O value on a stalagmite record in the last deglacial to middle Holocene period from southwestern Japan

Hirokazu Kato et al.

Summary: By studying the stalagmite sample Hiro-1 from Maboroshi Cave in Hiroshima Prefecture using carbonate clumped isotope thermometry, estimates of paleo-temperature and water delta O-18 variability were obtained through Delta(47) values calibration. The study revealed strong kinetic isotope influences in layers affected by prior calcite precipitation under dry climatic conditions, indicating a comprehensive isotopic depletion process from vapor source to meteoric water. The pre-Holocene period exhibited larger 18(O)-depletion compared to the middle Holocene period, attributed to various factors such as vapor generation under lower temperature or changes in seasonality of precipitation.
