Demagnetization Energy and Internal Stress in Magnetite From Temperature-Dependent Hysteresis Measurements

Annemarieke Beguin et al.

Summary: The study reveals that stress anisotropy vanishes with increasing temperature in magnetite, and a new measurement and evaluation method can effectively separate stress-induced anisotropy and demagnetization effects, providing a new approach to studying the reliability of remanent magnetization in rocks.

Out-of-sequence skeletal growth causing oscillatory zoning in arc olivines

Pablo Salas et al.

Summary: Primitive olivines from monogenetic cones in the Central-South Andes show dendritic, skeletal, and polyhedral growth textures, with high Fo-Ni cores contrasting with dendritic olivines, indicating sequential nucleation. A new growth model suggests rapid olivine growth through concentric addition of crystal frames, leaving behind compositional boundary layers that subsequently fill in with Fo-Ni-depleted olivine, causing reversals. Elemental diffusion modeling reveals individual crystal frame growth and eruption at the surface occurring over 3.5-40 days, constraining magma ascent rates and suggesting differences in textures between magmas erupted in arc settings compared to ocean island basalts.

On the distribution of Verwey transition temperatures in natural magnetites

Mike J. Jackson et al.

Summary: The Verwey transition temperature in magnetite shows a bimodal distribution, with most lithological subsets having a peak around 120 K and one or more additional peaks at lower temperatures. This distribution pattern is a general characteristic of natural magnetites and provides context for interpreting natural processes or conditions during formation or alteration of magnetite.
