Release from biogenic particles, benthic fluxes, and deep water circulation control Cr and δ53Cr distributions in the ocean interior

David J. Janssen et al.

Summary: Chromium in the ocean is controlled by redox processes, with removal and release mechanisms differing between surface and deep waters. Global Cr distributions are influenced by a combination of circulation patterns, biogenic processes, and water mass mixing. More research is needed on how sedimentary Cr records reflect these processes.

Trivalent chromium isotopes in the eastern tropical North Pacific oxygen-deficient zone

Tianyi Huang et al.

Summary: Research findings in the eastern tropical North Pacific (ETNP) oxygen-deficient zone (ODZ) support theoretical and experimental studies predicting that lighter chromium is preferentially reduced in low-oxygen environments and residual dissolved chromium becomes heavier due to removal of particl-reactive Cr(III) on sinking particles. Microbial activity, dependent on sinking organic matter flux, may be the dominant mechanism for chromium transformation, rather than a simple inorganic chemical conversion.

The chromium isotope fractionation factor in seawater

Xiangli Wang

Summary: The stable chromium (Cr) isotope system is increasingly being used as a redox proxy for studying the oxygenation history of Earth's ocean-atmosphere system, but understanding of Cr isotope fractionation in modern seawater is still limited. There is a linear relationship between the isotope composition and the logarithmic concentration of total dissolved Cr in the global ocean, but a significant proportion of data deviates from this global trend. Experimental results suggest that this deviation may be explained by parallel removal pathways with varying 'intrinsic' Cr isotope fractionation factors.

Chromium stable isotope geochemistry in the Mobile Bay Estuary

Ryan Roseburrough et al.

Summary: This study found that chromium behaves non-conservatively in the Mobile Bay Estuary, with a model developed to explain the observed data showing that 60% of Cr(VI) is reduced to Cr(III) and 40% of the produced Cr(III) is removed from solution. While these parameters may not be the sole solution to the system of equations involved, they are consistent with previous estimates.

Pulsed volcanism and rapid oceanic deoxygenation during Oceanic Anoxic Event 1a

Kohen W. Bauer et al.

Summary: The early Aptian Oceanic Anoxic Event 1a (OAE1a) was marked by widespread oceanic anoxia, biological crises, and volcanic activity. Research using geochemical data has shown that rapid oceanic deoxygenation followed the initial phases of volcanism and a biocalcification crisis, lasting for almost one million years. This new understanding separates volcanism, biological crisis, and oceanic deoxygenation in time, linking them through Earth system responses over tens of thousands of years.
