The PINT database: a definitive compilation of absolute palaeomagnetic intensity determinations since 4 billion years ago

Richard K. Bono et al.

Summary: The updated PINT database provides crucial constraints on the evolution of Earth's deep interior and its magnetic environment, with a trend towards increasing quality of data in studies published after the year 2000. The spatio-temporal distribution analysis reveals biases towards young records in the Northern hemisphere and intervals with little to no data in the Palaeozoic and Precambrian.

Low Paleointensities and Ar/Ar Ages From Saint Helena Provide Evidence for Recurring Magnetic Field Weaknesses in the South Atlantic

Yael A. Engbers et al.

Summary: The South Atlantic Anomaly (SAA) is the most significant anomaly in the Earth's magnetic field. This study presents the first paleointensity data from Saint Helena, indicating a weak and unstable magnetic field in the South Atlantic region. These findings suggest that the SAA is not a single occurrence but part of a recurring pattern of weaknesses in the magnetic field.

Understanding Nonideal Paleointensity Recording in Igneous Rocks: Insights From Aging Experiments on Lava Samples and the Causes and Consequences of Fragile Curvature in Arai Plots

L. Tauxe et al.

Summary: The theory for recording of thermally blocked remanences predicts a quasilinear relationship between low fields acquiring magnetization. The requirement for a paleointensity experiment is that a magnetization blocked at a given temperature should be unblocked by zero-field reheating to the same temperature, however, this condition often fails, leading to nonideal experimental behavior and inaccurate field strength estimates. The fragility of unblocking temperature spectra may be related to grain sizes with lower energy barriers and can impact the ability to accurately estimate ancient magnetic field strengths.

Four-Dimensional Paleomagnetic Dataset: Plio-Pleistocene Paleodirection and Paleointensity Results From the Erebus Volcanic Province, Antarctica

H. Asefaw et al.

Summary: The fundamental assumption in paleomagnetism is that the Earth's magnetic field can be approximated by a geocentric axial dipole (GAD). While global paleomagnetic directions from the last 5 million years support a GAD field structure, paleointensity estimates over the same period do not. This study reexamines the paleomagnetic field structure in Antarctica to determine the validity of low intensity readings.

Characterizing the Geomagnetic Field at High Southern Latitudes: Evidence From the Antarctic Peninsula

Joseph Biasi et al.

Summary: The lack of high-latitude paleomagnetic data makes it unclear if the geocentric axial dipole hypothesis accurately describes the behavior of the geomagnetic field in those regions. New data from the James Ross Island volcanic group in Antarctica suggests that the Antarctic Peninsula has not experienced significant tectonic movement in the last five million years. The data does not support or refute previous studies on the strength and direction of the magnetic field in the area.
