Habitat thermal quality for Gopherus evgoodei in tropical deciduous forest and consequences of habitat modification by buffelgrass

Rafael A. Lara-Resendiz et al.

Summary: Tortoises of the genus Gopherus have evolved and survived environmental challenges for 40 million years. However, they now face multiple threats, such as the introduction of invasive plant species. This study evaluates the thermal quality of the primary habitat of Gopherus evgoodei and determines the potential thermal changes due to habitat modification by buffelgrass. The results show that the modified habitat has a negative impact on the thermal quality for the tortoises.

Micro and macroclimatic constraints on the activity of a vulnerable tortoise: A mechanistic approach under a thermal niche view

Rafael A. Sara-Resendiz et al.

Summary: Thermal constraints imposed by the environment limit the activity time of ectotherms, and assessing these restrictions is crucial for understanding species vulnerability and developing conservation strategies. In this study, we created a tortoise model to examine thermal constraints at different scales and projected the impacts of climate change. The results revealed variations in the activity time of the tortoise throughout the year and among years, and predicted increased vulnerability under a pessimistic climate change scenario.

A less data demanding ecophysiological niche modeling approach for mammals with comparison to conventional correlative niche modeling

Luara Tourinho et al.

Summary: The study found that hybrid models did not show higher accuracy in predicting species distribution compared to correlative models. While the extent of suitable areas predicted did not differ significantly, there were differences in the location of potential suitable areas between the two types of models. Therefore, the choice of model approach should be based on the research objective rather than assumptions about data requirements or the superiority of hybrid models.

How will climate change impact fossorial lizard species? Two examples in the Baja California Peninsula

Rafael A. Lara-Resendiz et al.

Summary: Global climate change and habitat suitability erosion pose pervasive threats to biodiversity, requiring the identification of specific stressors to assess species vulnerability. This study employs a combination of field, laboratory, and modeling approaches to assess the potential consequences of climate change on two endemic lizard species from Baja California, Mexico. Results suggest high extinction risk for both species based on thermal habitat suitability, with one species potentially expanding northward while the other contracts significantly.

Thermoregulatory strategies of three reclusive lizards (genus Xantusia) from the Baja California peninsula, Mexico, under current and future microenvironmental temperatures

Diego M. Arenas-Moreno et al.

Summary: This study characterized the thermal ecology of three lizard species with different microhabitat use along the Baja California peninsula. The results indicate that these lizard species have developed thermoregulatory mechanisms to adapt to thermal heterogeneity and show some vulnerability to climate change.
