A critical evaluation of novel demulsifying agents based on acrylic terpolymers for Mexican heavy crude oils dehydration

Jessica V. Fuentes et al.

Summary: A novel random acrylic terpolymer based on butyl acrylate, 2-(dimethylamino)ethyl acrylate, and 2-carboxyethyl acrylate monomers showed efficient demulsifying properties in heavy crude oils with stable water-in-oil emulsions. The best water removal performance was achieved with terpolymers containing 90-80% of the hydrophobic monomer B and small amounts of the hydrophilic monomers Ae and Ce. The correlation between molecular parameters of the terpolymers and physicochemical parameters of the crude oils allows for accurate prediction of water removal efficiency, aiding in selecting the best demulsifier for a specific petroleum stream.

Stabilization mechanism and chemical demulsification of water-in-oil and oil-in-water emulsions in petroleum industry: A review

Duo Wang et al.

Summary: Emulsions frequently encountered in petroleum production pose technical challenges and increase costs. Chemical treatment with demulsifiers plays a vital role in destabilizing the complex emulsions, but developing effective and cost-efficient demulsifiers remains challenging. This review systematically examines the stabilization mechanisms of emulsions and categorizes demulsifiers for water-in-oil and oil-in-water emulsions, providing insights into efficient demulsification methods.

Synthesis and application of geminal dicationic ionic liquids and poly(ionic liquids) combined imidazolium and pyridinium cations as demulsifiers for petroleum crude oil saline water emulsions

Ayman M. Atta et al.

Summary: The new geminal dicationic ionic liquids (ILs) showed promising demulsification performance for stable sea water-in-heavy petroleum crude oil emulsions, with lower melting and glass transition temperatures. Their surface activity, micellization behavior, and adsorption at various interfaces were investigated, showing effective interactions with asphaltenes.

Alkylacrylic-carboxyalkylacrylic random bipolymers as demulsifiers for heavy crude oils

Jessica V. Fuentes et al.

Summary: This paper explains the preparation and characterization of a series of acrylic random bipolymers using emulsion polymerization technique. The study found that the weight ratio of monomers significantly impacts the effectiveness of the bipolymers in destabilizing water/crude oil emulsions. The KC bipolymer with a monomer ratio of K/C = 80/20 w/w showed superior demulsifying performance compared to the KA bipolymer at the same weight ratio, indicating the importance of monomer selection in achieving desired properties for emulsion breakers. The study also calculated various structure-activity parameters to predict water removal efficiency.

Mechanisms on the stability and instability of water-in-oil emulsion stabilized by interfacially active asphaltenes: Role of hydrogen bonding reconstructing

Jun Ma et al.

Summary: This study used molecular dynamic simulation to reveal the molecular mechanisms of the interfacially active asphaltenes (IAA) in stabilizing oil-water emulsions. The demulsifier can disrupt the hydrogen bonds and pi-pi stacking between IAA molecules, facilitating the coalescence of water droplets in the emulsion for efficient demulsification.
