Using Direct Numerical Simulation of Pore-Level Events to Improve Pore-Network Models for Prediction of Residual Trapping of CO2

Amir H. Kohanpur et al.

Summary: Researchers have developed a new pore-level flow model using lattice-Boltzmann method for direct numerical simulation in the pore-network modeling of imbibition. By simulating typical idealized pore-network configurations and evaluating the interface evolution and local capillary pressure, modified equations for the local threshold capillary pressure of pore elements were obtained. The modified model shows improved performance in predicting the saturation of residual trapped CO2.

Comparison of pore-scale capillary pressure to macroscale capillary pressure using direct numerical simulations of drainage under dynamic and quasi-static conditions

Santosh Konangi et al.

Summary: Conventional macroscale two-phase flow equations for porous media require accurate characterization of capillary forces, which are significantly impacted by the capillary pressure relation. Traditional macroscopic capillary pressure definitions are only valid under equilibrium conditions, and experimental measurements implicitly include effects of viscous pressure head under dynamic conditions. Pore-scale capillary pressure evaluation is essential for understanding capillary forces in different flow conditions and upscaling to accurately characterize capillary-dominant two-phase flow.

An integrated pore size distribution measurement method of small angle neutron scattering and mercury intrusion capillary pressure

Rui Shen et al.

Summary: The integrated analysis of small-angle neutron scattering and high-pressure mercury intrusion capillary pressure testing on shale oil reservoir samples in the Jimsar Sag of the Junggar Basin, China, revealed two main types of pore size distributions - declining type and submicron pore-dominated type. These distributions correspond to different lithological facies and have significant implications for the quality of reservoir development.
