Embedding decomposition for artifacts removal in EEG signals

Junjie Yu et al.

Summary: DeepSeparator is a deep learning-based method that separates neural signals and artifacts in the embedding space to reconstruct denoised signals. Testing on semi-synthetic and real EEG datasets, it outperforms conventional models in removing EOG and EMG artifacts, demonstrating its potential for future EEG denoising applications.

Identification of Lower-Limb Motor Tasks via Brain-Computer Interfaces: A Topical Overview

Victor Asanza et al.

Summary: This study provides an overview of specialized papers on lower-limb motor task identification through pattern recognition (PR)-based brain-computer interface (BCI)/electroencephalography (EEG) signal analysis systems. The study found that while there are significant studies on identifying or classifying upper-limb movement intentions, there is a lack of research on lower-limb movement intention identification. However, lower-limb neurorehabilitation is an important topic in medical settings as many people struggle with mobility issues in their lower limbs. The study highlights the importance of comparative studies to better understand and select appropriate techniques.

Neural Bases of Age-Related Sensorimotor Slowing in the Upper and Lower Limbs

Uros Marusic et al.

Summary: With advanced age, there is a loss of reaction speed that may increase the risk of falling. The study used ERPs and a simple visual reaction task to investigate sensory and motor processing in the upper and lower limbs. The results suggest that motor cortical processes and late-stage sensory processing play important roles in the slowing of simple reaction time in older adults.

Effect of power feature covariance shift on BCI spatial-filtering techniques: A comparative study

Aleksandar Miladinovic et al.

Summary: The study aimed to identify the most robust spatial filtering approach for EEG-based BCI systems and found that FBCSP and FBSCPT methods showed better performance and higher stability in handling feature covariance shifts. Application of Stationary Subspace Analysis (SSA) can improve models' performance and reduce accuracy decline from calibration to test set.

How using brain-machine interfaces influences the human sense of agency

Emilie A. Caspar et al.

Summary: The study investigated the impact of different factors on the sense of agency in using brain-machine interfaces. Lack of sensorimotor feedback did not affect sense of agency, but lower control over the BMI reduced it. Participants who controlled the BMI better demonstrated greater appropriation of the robotic hand.

Electroencephalographic Recording of the Movement-Related Cortical Potential in Ecologically Valid Movements: A Scoping Review

Sharon Olsen et al.

Summary: The movement-related cortical potential (MRCP) is a brain signal representing cortical processes involved in movement preparation, which has been widely studied in simple movements but lacks ecological validity. Research synthesizing evidence on MRCP in ecologically valid movements suggests that signal characteristics vary across tasks and populations. More studies on clinical populations are needed to progress understanding of MRCP characteristics for neurological recovery and intervention efficacy.

EEG-Based Volitional Control of Prosthetic Legs for Walking in Different Terrains

Hongbo Gao et al.

Summary: A brain-computer interface (BCI) based on motor imagery (MI) was developed to achieve stable and flexible walking of prosthetic legs according to human intention. The EEG-based volitional control of powered prosthetic legs was validated by experiments on three subjects, demonstrating smooth walking on different terrains based on human intention recognition and sensory feedback loop through functional electrical stimulation (FES). The novel strategy of utilizing human mind for ambulation mode selection of prosthetic legs offers a promising approach for enhancing the auxiliary effect of prosthetic legs on amputees.
