Determination of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons in Seafood by PLE-LC-APCI-MS/MS and Preliminary Risk Assessment of the Northeast Brazil Oil Spill

Ana Paula Zapelini de Melo et al.

Summary: The aim of this study was to develop a fast, sensitive, and reliable method for detecting eight polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in seafood. By using specific sample preparation and analysis techniques, the concentrations of these polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in the samples were determined, and it was found that the concentrations were below the limits established by the Brazilian regulatory agency and the European Union.

Environmental fate of petroleum biomarkers in Deepwater Horizon oil spill residues over the past 10 years

Marieh Arekhi et al.

Summary: This study investigated the long-term fate of three groups of petroleum biomarker compounds in Deepwater Horizon (DWH) oil spill residues collected from Alabama beaches over a 10-year period. The results showed that some compounds degraded over time, while others remained recalcitrant. Despite some degradation, the relative diagnostic ratios of the biomarkers remained stable over the 10-year period, providing valuable insights for future studies on the long-term environmental impacts of oil spill residues.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in coffee samples: Enquiry into processes and analytical methods

Arianna Binello et al.

Summary: PAHs, potentially genotoxic and carcinogenic compounds, are mainly derived from incomplete combustion and pyrolysis of organic matter. Coffee, a widely consumed beverage, may contain PAHs due to roasting processes. To ensure the safety of this popular commodity, control over the entire production chain is essential.
