The immunosuppressive activity of artemisinin-type drugs towards inflammatory and autoimmune diseases

Thomas Efferth et al.

Summary: Artemisinin and its derivatives exhibit immunosuppressive activity by inhibiting various receptor-coupled signaling pathways, leading to the inhibition of the transcription factor NF-kappa B. They downregulate numerous downstream genes involved in immune cell differentiation, apoptosis, proliferation, signal transduction, and antioxidant stress response. Additionally, artemisinins have shown therapeutic efficacy in various inflammatory and autoimmune diseases in disease-relevant animal models.
