A comparison between the effects of shape memory alloys and carbon nanotubes on the thermal buckling of laminated composite beams

Saeed Kamarian et al.

Summary: The correct choice of reinforcing materials is essential for designing composite structures exposed to heat. This research compares the performances of two advanced materials, Shape Memory Alloys (SMAs) and Carbon Nanotubes (CNTs), in the thermal buckling behavior of thin composite beams. The results show that depending on the structural conditions, one reinforcing material can outperform the other. Simultaneous use of both materials can significantly enhance the critical buckling temperatures.

Influence of carbon nanotubes on thermal expansion coefficient and thermal buckling of polymer composite plates: experimental and numerical investigations

S. Kamarian et al.

Summary: The article experimentally explores the effect of multi-walled carbon nanotubes on the coefficient of thermal expansion of epoxy-based composites and presents conclusions based on experimental data. Additionally, numerical analysis of thermal buckling behavior of composite plates is conducted, revealing the significant impact of MWCNTs on critical buckling temperature. Adding 0.3wt.% CNT into the matrix phase can increase the critical buckling temperature between 35 and 42%.

Thermal buckling analysis of sandwich plates with soft core and CNT-Reinforced composite face sheets

Saeed Kamarian et al.

Summary: This study investigates the use of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) to increase the critical buckling temperature of sandwich plates with soft core and laminated composite face sheets. Experimental tests show that the addition of only 0.3% CNTs significantly enhances the thermo-mechanical properties of the composite face sheets. Thermal buckling equations for sandwich plates with CNT-reinforced face sheets are derived and various analytical methods are employed to analyze the thermal buckling behavior, with results showing a 22%-36% increase in critical buckling temperature due to CNTs.

Axial and lateral buckling analysis of kevlar/epoxy fiber-reinforced composite laminates incorporating silica nanoparticles

Ozkan Ozbek

Summary: In this study, the experimental effect of silica nanoparticles on the buckling characteristics of Kevlar/epoxy fiber reinforced composite laminates was determined. Results showed that incorporation of NS particles led to increased critical buckling load values, with 1.5 wt% NS content showing the highest values. However, excessive NS content resulted in decreased critical buckling loads due to poor interfacial bonding and agglomeration.

Self-healing polymers using electrosprayed microcapsules containing oil: Molecular dynamics simulation and experimental studies

Chuan Sun et al.

Summary: The study investigates microcapsule-based smart coatings to reduce corrosion rate in oil and gas transmission lines. It has been found that smaller microcapsules improve corrosion resistance and adhesion of the coating to the substrate. A sample with 40 wt% microcapsules shows the best corrosion resistance, but polymers increase the results of electrochemical and water absorption tests, while the formation of microcracks is a serious problem in polymer composites.

Fracture Toughness of Hybrid Carbon Fibre/Epoxy Enhanced by Graphene and Carbon Nanotubes

Zixin Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of graphene nanoplatelets, multi-walled carbon nanotubes, and their hybridizations on the Mode I interlaminar fracture toughness of a carbon fibre reinforced polymer system. It was found that dispersing the smallest GNP size in a specific solvent can significantly enhance the fracture toughness.

Investigation of Tensile Properties of Glass Fiber/Epoxy Nanocomposites Laminates Enhanced with Graphene Nanoparticles

Mehmet Cagri Tuzemen et al.

Summary: The study found that the addition of graphene nanoparticles can significantly increase the tensile strength of glass fiber/epoxy nanocomposite materials, especially when the addition rate is 0.45%. However, an addition rate higher than 0.45% has a negative impact on mechanical properties, leading to a decrease in tensile strength. Furthermore, finite element analysis results were found to be consistent with experimental results.

Low-velocity impact behavior of incorporated GFRP composites with nanoclay and nanosilica in a corrosive environment: Experimental and numerical study

Yasaman Gitiara et al.

Summary: Investigating the impact properties of GFRP composite specimens with nanoclay and nanosilica in a corrosive environment showed that samples with nanoparticles performed better than the pure sample. The addition of 5 wt.% of nanoclay increased impact force and decreased displacement during low-velocity impact tests. Overall, specimens containing 5 wt.% of nanoclay exhibited better strength after immersion in corrosive solution compared to other samples.
