Environmentally associated chromosomal structural variation influences fine-scale population structure of Atlantic Salmon (Salmo salar)

K. Beth Watson et al.

Summary: The study identified chromosomal rearrangements in Atlantic Salmon populations in southern Newfoundland, Canada, with a particular focus on the Ssa01/Ssa23 translocation variant which was strongly correlated with population structure and temperature. The results suggest that environmental selection acting on these structural variants introduced through secondary contact may drive fine-scale local adaptation in Placentia Bay, Newfoundland, Canada.

Selection and introgression facilitated the adaptation of Chinese native endangered cattle in extreme environments

Xinfeng Liu et al.

Summary: This study sequenced the whole genomes of Chinese native endangered cattle breeds living in high-altitude or arid environments, revealing adaptive introgression from yak contributing to high-altitude adaptation and identifying candidate genes related to hypoxia response, water metabolism, immune response, body shape change, embryo development, and skeletal system development in cattle breeds under extreme conditions.

Introgression from farmed escapees affects the full life cycle of wild Atlantic salmon

Geir H. Bolstad et al.

Summary: After fifty years of salmon farming, the study found that genetic introgression from farmed escapees can accelerate the growth rate of wild Atlantic salmon and lead to earlier seaward migration and sexual maturity, with significant variation among populations. Additionally, variation at major-effect loci associated with age at maturity was minimally affected by farmed genetic ancestry.
