Neighborhood-Level Disadvantage Impacts on Patients with Fibrotic Interstitial Lung Disease

Gillian C. Goobie et al.

Summary: This study found that fILD patients living in economically disadvantaged areas in the United States have a higher risk of mortality, and patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis have lower odds of lung transplantation. However, these disparities are not observed in Canadian patients, suggesting differences in access to healthcare between the United States and Canada.

The Association of Aging Biomarkers, Interstitial Lung Abnormalities, and Mortality

Jason L. Sanders et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the associations among aging biomarkers, interstitial lung abnormalities (ILA), and all-cause mortality. The results showed that some aging-related biomarkers are associated with ILA, particularly GDF15, which may explain some of the associations among age, ILA, and mortality.

The Perils and Pitfalls of Esophageal Dysmotility in Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis

Ramsah Cheah et al.

Summary: The study showed that patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) who had esophageal motility disorders, especially ineffective esophageal motility (IEM), had more severe pulmonary disease and more proximal reflux events. In patients with IEM, intrathoracic pressure was negatively correlated with the number of proximal events, while inspiratory lower esophageal sphincter pressure was positively correlated with the percentage of reflux events reaching the proximal esophagus.

Hiatal hernia prevalence and natural history on non-contrast CT in the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA)

Jinhye Kim et al.

Summary: The study determined that the prevalence of hiatal hernia in the general population increases with age, female gender, and BMI. The use of proton pump inhibitors is associated with hiatal hernia and may lead to gastro-oesophageal reflux disease, while hiatal hernia progression is linked to higher BMI.
