Improvement of Mechanical Property for PLA/TPU Blend by Adding PLA-TPU Copolymers Prepared via In Situ Ring-Opening Polymerization

Hui Fang et al.

Summary: Polylactic acid (PLA)-thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) copolymer (PTC) was prepared by blending TPU pellets with molten lactide using ring-opening coordination polymerization. The addition of PTC improved the compatibility and mechanical properties of the PLA/TPU blend. The impact strength of the blend with 5 wt.% PTC loading was significantly higher compared to the blend without PTC and pure PLA.

Study on the fluidity, mechanical and fracture behavior of ABS/TPU/CNT nanocomposites

Farshad Heidari et al.

Summary: The addition of TPU into ABS improves melt flow index but reduces notched impact toughness, while carbon nanotubes in ABS/TPU blend enhance mechanical performances and create rough fracture surfaces. Nanocomposites containing 0.1 wt.% CNT show significant improvements in notched impact resistance and essential work of fracture compared to ABS/TPU blend. Furthermore, the appropriate dispersion and adhesion of carbon nanotubes are key factors affecting the fracture resistance of ABS/TPU/CNT nanocomposites.

Cyclic fatigue failure of TPU using a crack propagation approach

Giorgia Scetta et al.

Summary: The study shows that the stress-stretch curve of TPUs changes with the number of applied cycles when cyclically loaded up to the same value of maximum stretch, but eventually reaches a steady state. A suitable methodology based on fracture mechanics approach is proposed to evaluate the cyclic fatigue resistance in TPUs, with additional treatments to account for the higher tendency to creep of TPUs compared to thermoset rubbers. Comparing the results with classical filled rubbers, TPUs demonstrate excellent toughness and cyclic fatigue resistance, suggesting new opportunities for applications requiring resistance to crack propagation under cyclic loading at large strains.
