Order picking optimization with rack-moving mobile robots and multiple workstations

Yanling Zhuang et al.

Summary: This paper studies an automated warehousing system that uses robots to move racks to multiple workstations, enabling pickers to retrieve products from the racks for order fulfillment. The paper addresses the challenge of considering order and rack sequences simultaneously, while also ensuring workload balance and resolving rack conflicts among the workstations. To solve this problem, a comprehensive mixed integer programming model is formulated, and an adaptive large neighborhood search method is proposed. The proposed approach demonstrates significant improvements in rack movements compared to existing practices, with potential savings of up to 62% in a real-world dataset.

Order allocation, rack allocation and rack sequencing for pickers in a mobile rack environment

Cristiano Arbex Valle et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the simultaneous allocation of orders and mobile storage racks to static pickers in robotic mobile fulfillment systems. The problem is formulated as an integer program and two heuristics based on this formulation are presented. The sequencing of racks for pickers is also discussed, showing that focusing on a subset of orders can lead to feasible rack sequences for all orders. Computational results are provided for randomly generated test problems involving a large number of products, orders, racks, and pickers.
