Living and dead foraminifera assemblages as environmental indicators in the Almada River Estuary, Ilheus, northeastern Brazil

Lazaro Laut et al.

Summary: Analyses of living and dead foraminifera assemblages revealed the distribution patterns of different species in relation to environmental parameters and classified the estuary into five regions. This study efficiently characterized the environmental conditions of the Almada River Estuary and provided a basis for understanding natural or anthropic impacts on this ecosystem.

Sources and Metal Pollution of Sediments from a Coastal Area of the Central Western Adriatic Sea (Southern Marche Region, Italy)

Federico Spagnoli et al.

Summary: The study revealed pollution by As and Ba in the surficial sediments along the Southern Marche Region coast, as well as a general decrease in concentrations of Al, Ti, P, Co, Cr, Cu, etc. Several pollution indicators were used to assess the contamination levels and three different compositional facies were identified within the sediments.

Bioaccumulation and biomagnification of potential toxic elements (PTEs): An Avicennia germinans-Uca rapax trophic transfer story from Jobos Bay, Puerto Rico

Michael Martinez-Colon et al.

Summary: The mangrove forest in southern Puerto Rico is exposed to various sources of pollution, leading to accumulation of potentially toxic elements in flora and fauna. Fiddler crabs act as both de-concentrators for most pollutants and macro-concentrators for copper and arsenic. Arsenic is the only element found to be biomagnified through the sediment-mangrove leaf-fiddler crab food chain.

Summary: This study in the Marica-Guarapina Lagoon System in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, found that organic matter has a negative impact on foraminiferal and ostracode assemblages, with these lagoons being polluted by excessive nutrients from industrial and domestic sources.
