Seizure outcome in patients with cavernous malformation after early surgery

Manish Kapadia et al.

Summary: The study analyzed outcomes of 35 patients with cavernous malformations and found that patients with fewer preoperative seizures had higher rates of seizure freedom and were more likely to discontinue antiepileptic medications postoperatively. Early surgical resection is an effective treatment for these patients.

The SANTe study at 10 years of follow-up: Effectiveness, safety, and sudden unexpected death in epilepsy

Vicenta Salanova et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the long-term efficacy and safety of deep brain stimulation (DBS) for epilepsy, showing favorable outcomes with stable results. Reduction in frequency of the most severe seizure type may lower the risk of SUDEP. The SUDEP rate with DBS (2.0) is comparable to other neuromodulation treatments for drug-resistant focal epilepsy.

A Systematic Review of Minimally Invasive Procedures for Mesial Temporal Lobe Epilepsy: Too Minimal, Too Fast?

Ryan Wang et al.

Summary: For mTLE, LITT shows promising efficacy at >= 6 months postoperatively, while SRS has a latency period and is inferior to CAH (ROSE trial). RF-TC demonstrates variable seizure freedom rates and high re-operation rates. Studies varied in quality from fair to good. Additional research is needed before minimally invasive procedures can replace standard surgery.

Safety of focused ultrasound neuromodulation in humans with temporal lobe epilepsy

John M. Stern et al.

Summary: The study examined the safety and efficacy of Transcranial Focused Ultrasound (tFUS) neuromodulation in patients with refractory temporal lobe epilepsy undergoing surgery. Results showed that tFUS at intensities up to 5760 mW/cm(2) may be safe, with no detectable tissue damage and minimal changes in neuropsychological testing. Further research is needed due to methodological limitations and inconclusive findings.

A meta-analysis on potential modifiers of LITT efficacy for mesial temporal lobe epilepsy: Seizure-freedom seems to fade with time

Alexandros G. Brotis et al.

Summary: The efficacy of laser interstitial thermal therapy (LITT) in mesial temporal lobe epilepsy (MTLE) has not been fully established yet. With a moderate efficacy and enduring results, LITT seems to offer a viable alternative to resective surgery. Higher ablation volumes may be associated with improved seizure control.

What is the effect of delays in access to specialist epilepsy care on patient outcomes? A systematic review and meta-analysis

Annie K. Lewis et al.

Summary: This study found that early access to specialist epilepsy care for diagnosis, medication treatment, and surgery may lead to better outcomes for patients with epilepsy.

ResectVol: A tool to automatically segment and characterize lacunas in brain images

Raphael F. Casseb et al.

Summary: A new tool named ResectVol was developed to automatically segment and characterize surgical lacunas in postoperative MRI images of epilepsy patients. The performance of the tool was validated by comparing automatic and manual segmentations, resulting in a median Dice similarity coefficient of 0.77. ResectVol provides a user-friendly and fully automatic solution for these tasks, enabling more advanced analytical techniques for surgical outcomes prediction.
