Environmental hazard of cationic polymers relevant in personal and consumer care products: A critical review

Kristin A. Connors et al.

Summary: Historically, polymers have been excluded from the European chemical management program REACH. However, recently there has been increasing interest in including polymers. This study aimed to understand the limitations of previous studies on cationic polymers and identify sources of uncertainty in environmental hazard assessments. A consistent testing approach is recommended to advance the understanding of environmental hazard and risk characterization of cationic polymers.

Environmental fate and effects of water-soluble synthetic organic polymers used in cosmetic products

Karen Duis et al.

Summary: Polymers, due to their high molecular weight, are generally considered to have low environmental impact, exempt from registration and evaluation in the REACH framework. The European Commission is currently reviewing this exemption. Assessment of selected water-soluble synthetic organic polymers used in cosmetic products showed that they are expected to be effectively removed in wastewater treatment plants.

QSTR and interspecies-QSTR modelling for aquatic toxicity data gap filling of cationic polymers

Pathan Mohsin Khan et al.

Summary: Polymers are widely used globally and may have toxic effects on aquatic organisms. Models for toxicity prediction against fish and algae have been developed, showing the impact of charge density and molecular mass on toxicity. Interspecies structure-toxicity relationship models have been proposed to bridge the data gap for polymer toxicity.
