Public funds in high-tech industries: A blessing or a curse

Bofei Yang et al.

Summary: This paper examines the role of public funds in promoting innovation in high-tech industries using data from China. The study finds that public funds have direct effects on the innovation performance of high-tech industries in terms of patents and new product development. However, the share of public funds should be maintained at a certain level to prevent over-reliance. The study also identifies the indirect effects of public funds, showing that they can enhance the effects of private funds at the R&D stage but conflict with them at the application stage. The direction and magnitude of public funds' effects vary across regions and industries.

A Multi-stage Malmquist-Luenberger Index to Measure Environmental Productivity in China's Iron and Steel Industry

Liyun Zhu et al.

Summary: This study developed a multi-stage Malmquist-Luenberger index model that considers the growth and driving factors of environmental total factor productivity in different production processes. By applying the model to Chinese iron and steel enterprises from 2009 to 2013, the validity of the model was demonstrated. Results showed that environmental efficiency improvement is the critical factor in promoting ETFP growth, while technical regression in the steel-making sub-process is the main constraint to system ETFP growth, with significant regional variations in ETFP changes.

A two-stage DEA evaluation of Chinese mining industry technological innovation efficiency and eco-efficiency

Zhili Zuo et al.

Summary: Improving technological innovation efficiency and eco-efficiency is crucial for achieving a high-quality and sustainable mining industry in China. This study applies a two-stage DEA model to measure the mining technological innovation efficiency (MTIE), mining eco-efficiency (MEE), and mining comprehensive efficiency (MCE) of 30 provinces in China. The findings show the impact of mining economic development on MCE, regional differences in MTIE and MEE, and the need for efficiency optimization through different paths. Policy recommendations are provided to guide the high-quality development of the Chinese mining industry.

Estimation of dynamic panel spatial vector autoregression: Stability and spatial multivariate cointegration

Kai Yang et al.

Summary: This paper introduces dynamic panel spatial vector autoregressive models and classifies them into stable or unstable cases based on the features of dynamics and spatial interactions they generate. Identification and QML estimation methods are investigated for stable, spatial cointegration, and mixed cointegration cases, with bias-corrected estimators presented. Additionally, a sequential likelihood ratio testing procedure is introduced for detecting unknown cointegration relationships.

New patterns in China's regional green development: An interval Malmquist-Luenberger productivity analysis

Hongyun Huang et al.

Summary: This study proposes a novel global Malmquist-Luenberger productivity index to evaluate the provincial green total factor productivity (GTFP) in China and finds that the overall GTFP in China shows an increasing trend during the study period, with a declining growth rate in recent years. Furthermore, a shift in the inter-regional GTFP patterns from East-Center-West to South-North is observed, indicating a convergence in GTFP between the eastern, central, and western regions, while the gap between the southern and northern regions widens.

Regional difference and convergence analysis of marine science and technology innovation efficiency in China

Gen Li et al.

Summary: This study used stochastic frontier analysis to calculate the efficiency of marine science and technology innovation in 11 coastal provinces and cities in China from 2006 to 2015, analyzing regional differences and influencing factors. The results show an overall upward trend in marine science and technology innovation efficiency, with significant variation among provinces and cities. There is a significant negative correlation between government support and efficiency, while factors such as the scale of marine scientific research institutions and structure of scientific research personnel have positive impacts. Furthermore, there is no stochastic convergence among the Bohai Rim, Yangtze River Delta, and Pan-Pearl River Delta regions.
