Microbial adaptation to co-occurring vanadium and microplastics in marine and riverine environments

Weiwen Yin et al.

Summary: The study analyzed water and sediment samples from marine and river ecosystems potentially polluted by vanadium and microplastics, revealing their distribution and microbial responses. It found that high concentrations of vanadium and microplastics coexisted in aquatic environments, with plastic-degrading bacteria and vanadium-reducing bacteria enriched in microplastic biofilms. Additionally, vanadium was found to influence the microbial community on microplastics by altering environmental factors.

On the degradation of (micro)plastics: Degradation methods, influencing factors, environmental impacts

Lingchen Liu et al.

Summary: Plastics and microplastics are difficult to degrade in the natural environment due to their unique properties, such as hydrophobicity and stable chemical bonds; microplastics can attract other substances, delaying degradation and potentially spreading harmful substances through the food chain. Degradation is an effective way to address plastic pollution, but still faces challenges and requires further research and development of new degradation methods.

Summary: Whole-cell bioreporters (WCBs) are biological tools that use living microorganisms to sense chemicals by producing quantifiable signals. This paper reviews the concept and recent progress in constructing and applying WCBs for sensing petroleum hydrocarbons, addressing key challenges in improving sensitivity and detection limits. The discussion also highlights factors influencing bioreporter performance in environmental samples and suggests solutions for overcoming these barriers.

Shannen T. L. Sait et al.

Summary: This study investigated the environmentally relevant photodegradation of common microplastic fibres (MPFs) such as polyester (PET), polyamide (PA), and polyacrylonitrile (PAN). Results showed that PET and PA MPFs underwent significant fragmentation and surface changes under UV exposure, while PAN did not. Chemical analysis identified monomers, UV stabilisers, and degradation products in MPFs and aqueous leachates. Bisphenols (BPs) and benzophenones (BzPs) were also found in all MPFs, with wool displaying the highest concentration of BPs and BzPs.

Summary: Microplastics and nanoplastics, specifically 50 nm and 500 nm polystyrene particles, can be internalized into living cells through passive membrane penetration and active endocytosis, accumulating mainly in lysosomes. Larger particles, like 5 mu m polystyrene particles, are unable to adhere to or be internalized by cells due to their size and weak Brownian motion.
