Environmental impact assessment of the current, emerging, and alternative waste management systems using life cycle assessment tools: a case study of Johannesburg, South Africa

Oluwatobi Adeleke et al.

Summary: Proper information regarding the performance of waste management systems from an environmental perspective is significant to sustainable waste management decisions and planning toward the selection of the least impactful treatment options. This study evaluates the environmental impact of different waste management systems in South Africa, using Johannesburg as a case study, and finds that material recycling facilities are the most beneficial unit operation while landfilling without energy recovery is the most impactful. No scenario had the best performance across all impact categories, but S3 is considered the most environmentally friendly option with the lowest impact in most categories.

Global warming potential and energy dynamics of conservation tillage practices for different rabi crops in the Indo-Gangetic Plains

Ved Prakash Chaudhary et al.

Summary: A field experiment conducted in the sub-tropical Indo-Gangetic Plains showed that different tillage systems have significant impacts on energy indices, greenhouse gas emission, and carbon sustainability index. Among winter crops, HT generally exhibited higher output energy and energy use efficiency with lower greenhouse gas emissions compared to CT. The use of organic fertilizers and alternative energy sources like solar and wind power could potentially improve energy efficiency and reduce environmental impact in crop production.
