Mechanisms and adsorption capacities of hydrogen peroxide modified ball milled biochar for the removal of methylene blue from aqueous solutions

Yue Zhang et al.

Summary: Ball milling and H2O2 modification significantly increased the specific surface area of biochar and enhanced its adsorption efficiency towards methylene blue. The modified biochar had more oxygen-containing functional groups, leading to a faster adsorption rate for methylene blue.

Effects and mechanisms of modified biochars on microbial iron reduction of Geobacter sulfurreducens

Yue Lu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of regulating surface functional groups of biochar on the microbial iron reduction process. Modified biochars accelerated the microbial reduction reaction, with a better electron transfer performance due to larger surface area and more redox-active groups. Reactive oxygen species produced by one type of modified biochar inhibited the growth of the bacteria.

Activation of persulfate by nanoscale zero-valent iron loaded porous graphitized biochar for the removal of 17β-estradiol: Synthesis, performance and mechanism

Jinglin Ding et al.

Summary: In this study, biochar was pyrolyzed with potassium ferrate to achieve porosity, graphitization, and iron doping simultaneously, resulting in the synthesis of nanoscale zero-valent iron loaded porous graphitized biochar. The nZVI/PGBC showed superior efficiency in removing 17 beta-estradiol compared to other materials, and the removal efficiency was affected by reaction conditions. The reaction mechanism involved the activation of persulfate by Fe2+ and Fe3+ redox reactions, with PGBC acting as a carrier for nZVI and a mediator for electron transfer in E2 degradation.

Jing Zhang et al.

Summary: The study found that increasing the C-O/C = O groups within appropriate range promotes the catalytic activity for ozonation, while the presence of excessive carboxyl groups has a negative impact on activity. Additionally, enhanced ozone adsorption on active sites was confirmed by DFT calculations.

Summary: Biochar, as an economical carbonaceous material, has emerged as an alternative candidate in catalysis field. Functional structures on biochar, such as oxygen-containing groups, defects, and persistent free radicals, have been identified as active sites in heterogeneous catalytic systems. Loaded metal components and doped heteroatoms can also act as active sites in the catalysis system.
