Pesticide residues in juvenile Chinook salmon and prey items of the Sacramento River watershed, California-A comparison of riverine and floodplain habitats

Sara E. Anzalone et al.

Summary: Juvenile Chinook salmon in the Sacramento River system can be exposed to pesticides in riverine and floodplain environments. The study found that zooplankton, a primary food source for the salmon, had higher pesticide concentrations compared to macroinvertebrates. Additionally, floodplain rearing was associated with increased organochlorine exposure in the fish.

Dietary Exposure to Bifenthrin and Fipronil Impacts Swimming Performance in Juvenile Chinook Salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha)

Jason T. Magnuson et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of dietary exposure to bifenthrin and fipronil on the swimming performance, energetic processes, and liver health of juvenile Chinook salmon. The results showed that the ingestion of bifenthrin and the mixture of bifenthrin and fipronil significantly reduced swimming performance and affected certain biochemical indicators, while the ingestion of fipronil alone did not have a significant effect.

Bioavailability of legacy and current-use pesticides in juvenile Chinook salmon habitat of the Sacramento River watershed: Importance of sediment characteristics and extraction techniques

Neil Fuller et al.

Summary: This study investigated the distribution of pesticides in two important salmon habitats in the Sacramento River watershed. The results showed that the floodplain had significantly higher concentrations of organochlorines compared to the mainstem Sacramento River, and juvenile fish in the floodplain may be more exposed to organochlorines than fish in the river. Additionally, high flow conditions may exacerbate pesticide exposure for fish and other biota.

Effects of dietary cypermethrin exposure on swimming performance and expression of lipid homeostatic genes in livers of juvenile Chinook salmon, Oncorhynchus tshawytscha

Neil Fuller et al.

Summary: Juvenile Chinook salmon were dietarily exposed to cypermethrin for 7, 14, or 21 days, with results showing no significant alterations in burst swimming performance but potential changes in gene expression related to lipid synthesis and energy metabolism in the liver. These findings suggest that U-max may not be a sensitive endpoint for assessing the effects of pyrethroids like cypermethrin, highlighting the importance of analyzing gene expression in fish exposed to pesticides.

Salinity Changes the Dynamics of Pyrethroid Toxicity in Terms of Behavioral Effects on Newly Hatched Delta Smelt Larvae

Amelie Segarra et al.

Summary: Salinity can interact with organic compounds and modulate their toxicity, potentially increasing the risk of exposure for aquatic organisms. Studies have shown that pyrethroid concentrations increase in the SFBD estuary during the rainy season, coinciding with the spawning season of an endangered fish species. Salinity intrusion exacerbated by climate change may alter the dynamics of pyrethroid toxicity on aquatic animals.

Transcriptomic and Histopathological Effects of Bifenthrin to the Brain of Juvenile Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss)

Jason T. Magnuson et al.

Summary: The neurotoxic effects of bifenthrin on rainbow trout mainly involve disrupting neuroendocrine function, affecting cell signaling pathways, and inducing apoptosis. Research findings suggest that low concentrations of bifenthrin can have significant impacts on endangered fish species.

Applied pesticide toxicity shifts toward plants and invertebrates, even in GM crops

Ralf Schulz et al.

Summary: Systematic interpretation of changes in the use of 381 pesticides over 25 years reveals that the toxicity of applied insecticides to aquatic invertebrates and pollinators has considerably increased, driven by highly toxic pyrethroids and neonicotinoids. Additionally, since around 2010, there has been an increasing applied toxicity to aquatic invertebrates and pollinators in genetically modified corn, as well as to terrestrial plants in herbicide-tolerant soybeans. These findings challenge the assumption of decreasing environmental impacts of pesticide use.

Summary: This study identified the potential for trophic transfer of chlorpyrifos from OP-resistant Hyalella azteca to the predator Menidia beryllina, and found that elevated temperatures may exacerbate the neurotoxic effects of chlorpyrifos.
