The transplacental transfer efficiency of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS): a first meta-analysis

Mareike Appel et al.

Summary: This study provided comprehensive evidence on PFAS transfer rates across the human placental barrier using a meta-analysis approach. It found a curvilinear relationship with chain length and functional groups affecting transfer efficiencies. Less studied PFAS compounds like PFHxA, 6:2 FTS, and PFBA exhibited high transfer efficiencies, emphasizing the need for more research to assess potential risks for fetal exposure.

Prenatal and postnatal transfer of perfluoroalkyl substances from mothers to their offspring

Yingxue Liu et al.

Summary: This review summarizes the current knowledge on the transfer of PFASs from mothers to fetuses/infants, highlighting the different transfer efficiencies and potential risks associated with prenatal and postnatal exposure. The study found that transfer efficiencies vary among different PFASs, and infants may face greater PFAS exposure through breastfeeding in the first month than through transplacental transfer during the entire gestation period. This review sheds light on the critical environmental health issue of PFASs in fetuses and infants, emphasizing the need for greater attention and awareness in society.

Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substance Toxicity and Human Health Review: Current State of Knowledge and Strategies for Informing Future Research

Suzanne E. Fenton et al.

Summary: Reports on the impacts of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) on the environment and human health have increased substantially in peer-reviewed literature. Epidemiological studies have shown associations between exposure to specific PFAS and various health effects, and further research is needed to understand differences in responses between sexes, species, and life stages. More contemporary approaches such as read-across, molecular dynamics, and protein modeling are proposed to accelerate the development of toxicity information on PFAS, as well as the need for precaution to protect human health given the known effects of certain PFAS compounds.

PFAS Exposure Pathways for Humans and Wildlife: A Synthesis of Current Knowledge and Key Gaps in Understanding

Amila O. De Silva et al.

Summary: The understanding of human and wildlife exposures to PFAS has mainly focused on a few traditional substances, but there is a need for assessment of a wider range of new PFAS. Diet is a major pathway of human exposure to some PFAS, but there is significant variability across populations and compounds. Total fluorine data and information on unidentified organofluorine are essential, and water has been identified as a major exposure source in contaminated communities. As water sources are remediated, other sources of exposure such as dust, personal care products, and indoor environments may become more significant.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in livestock and game species: A review

Clare Death et al.

Summary: Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are synthetic chemicals with resistance to environmental breakdown, leading to concerns for human, animal, and environmental health. The main source of human exposure to PFAS is through dietary intake, but understanding of exposure in terrestrial animals is limited. More research is needed to define PFAS concentrations in livestock and game species. Livestock and game animals may be exposed to PFAS through various sources, and the contribution of these exposures to PFAS concentrations in food products is not well studied. Further studies on toxicokinetics and health effects in animals are necessary to address the potential risks associated with PFAS exposure.

Prenatal exposure to perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances and birth outcomes: A longitudinal cohort with repeated measurements

Lin Chen et al.

Summary: Most PFAS concentrations declined during pregnancy, while some were negatively associated with birth length, particularly in the first trimester for female fetuses. No significant associations were found between PFAS and birth weight or head circumference. The sensitive window of exposure for adverse effects on birth outcomes appeared to be in the first trimester.

Prenatal exposure to per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances in association with autism spectrum disorder in the MARBLES study

Jiwon Oh et al.

Summary: Prenatal exposure to per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) such as PFOA and PFNA was found to be associated with an increased risk of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in children, while exposure to PFHxS showed a negative association. Furthermore, higher concentrations of PFOA, PFNA, and PC-1 were associated with an increased risk of ASD.

Prenatal exposure to per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances and cognitive development in infancy and toddlerhood

Jiwon Oh et al.

Summary: This study revealed that prenatal maternal serum perfluorooctanoate (PFOA) concentrations were inversely associated with child's cognitive development in infancy and toddlerhood, particularly at 24 and 36 months. While other five PFAS showed weak associations with cognitive development, PFOA exhibited significant negative effects on both the overall cognitive scores and specific subscales.

Summary: Prenatal PFOS and PFNA were consistently associated with measures related to hyperactive impulsive type ADHD across two validated assessment instruments. PFHxS was associated with increased problems with both externalizing and internalizing behaviors. No associations were noted between PFOA and child neurobehavior.

Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) in Breast Milk: Concerning Trends for Current-Use PFAS

Guomao Zheng et al.

Summary: This study found that a variety of PFAS are present in breast milk from mothers in the United States, including both legacy and current-use compounds, potentially exposing nursing infants. Perfluorooctanesulfonic acid and perfluorooctanoic acid were the most common PFAS in the samples, while the detection frequency and concentration of short-chain PFAS are increasing.
