An evolving view on biogeochemical cycling of iron

Andreas Kappler et al.

Summary: The biogeochemical cycling of iron plays a crucial role in environmental processes such as ocean productivity, carbon storage, greenhouse gas emissions, and nutrient and contaminant fate. Recent studies have uncovered novel processes in the biogeochemical iron cycle and shown that oxidation and reduction of iron occur cyclically or simultaneously in many environments.

Effects of low-molecular-weight organic acids/thiols on hydroxyl radical production from natural siderite oxidation

Hao Yu et al.

Summary: The study found that the presence of low-molecular-weight organic acids (LMWOAs) and thiols (LMWOTs) significantly enhanced the production of hydroxyl radicals (center dot OH) during siderite oxidation. LMWOAs and LMWOTs reacted with Fe(II) to produce complexed Fe(II), leading to an increased production of center dot OH. This overlooked catalytic effect of LMWOAs/LMWOTs on center dot OH production from siderite oxidation highlights the importance of considering these organic compounds in redox-dynamic conditions.

Ligand Effects on Biotic and Abiotic Fe(II) Oxidation by the Microaerophile Sideroxydans lithotrophicus

Nanqing Zhou et al.

Summary: This study quantified biotic and abiotic Fe(II) oxidation rates using a model microaerophilic Fe(II)-oxidizing bacterium in the presence of different organic ligands. Results showed that various models and natural iron-binding ligands have distinct effects on abiotic versus biotic Fe(II) oxidation rates. Organic ligands such as citrate and NTA were found to have different effects on the oxidation rates.

Organic Matter from Redoximorphic Soils Accelerates and Sustains Microbial Fe(III) Reduction

Andreas Fritzsche et al.

Summary: In redoximorphic soils, microbial reduction of iron (III) minerals is significantly influenced by organic matter, which can either decelerate or accelerate the reduction rate. The organic matter released by microbial activity under anaerobic conditions (efOM) plays a key role in affecting the electron uptake and crystallinity of iron (III) minerals. The presence of efOM, whether adsorbed or coprecipitated, leads to distinct effects on microbial reduction of iron (III) minerals by affecting the surface passivation and altering the mineral structure.

Determination of ambient dissolved metal ligand complexation parameters via kinetics and pseudo-voltammetry experiments

George W. Luther et al.

Summary: The study discusses the dissolved chemical speciation of metals in natural waters and methods to investigate metal organic ligand complexes. Competitive ligand exchange-cathodic stripping voltammetry titrations and pseudovoltammetry provide information about metal-ligand complexes. Kinetic experiments combined with the addition of competitive ligands offer insights into the dissociation rate constant and conditional equilibrium constant of the unknown metal-ligand complexes.
