Measurement report: Optical properties and sources of water-soluble brown carbon in Tianjin, North China insights from organic molecular compositions

Junjun Deng et al.

Summary: This study investigates the light absorption and fluorescence properties of water-soluble brown carbon (BrC) in the atmosphere of urban Tianjin in northern China. The research reveals seasonal variations in the light absorption properties of BrC, with stronger absorption in winter. It also identifies the sources of BrC, including fossil fuel combustion, primary bioaerosol emission, biomass burning, and biogenic and anthropogenic secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formation.

Speciated atmospheric mercury during haze and non-haze periods in winter at an urban site in Beijing, China: Pollution characteristics, sources, and causes analyses

Chunjie Wang et al.

Summary: During February to March 2018, speciated atmospheric mercury levels in Beijing, China showed significant variations, with GEM and PBM2.5 concentrations notably higher during haze periods, possibly due to the accumulation of pollutants caused by strong subsidence of air masses. There was no significant difference in GOM concentrations between haze and non-haze periods.

Precursors and Pathways Leading to Enhanced Secondary Organic Aerosol Formation during Severe Haze Episodes

Yan Zheng et al.

Summary: This study used molecular analyses to investigate the key precursors and chemical processes of secondary organic aerosol formation in Beijing's winter PM2.5. Results showed that both photochemical and aqueous processing were involved in producing SOA during haze events, with important precursors including aromatics, isoprene, long-chain alkanes or alkenes, and carbonyls such as glyoxal and methylglyoxal. The enhanced SOA formation during severe haze events was mainly attributed to aqueous processing, highlighting the importance of reducing nitrogen oxides for future SOA control. Further research is needed on the formation of highly oxygenated long-chain molecules in polluted urban environments.

Identification of potential sources of elevated PM2.5-Hg using mercury isotopes during haze events

Yue Qiu et al.

Summary: The study reveals that the sources and transport patterns of PM2.5-Hg during haze events are complex and vary by season, with autumn being mainly contributed by local and/or regional anthropogenic emissions from northern China, and winter significantly influenced by biomass burning from northeastern China.

Mercury stable isotopes constrain atmospheric sources to the ocean

Martin Jiskra et al.

Summary: Mercury exposure through consumption of seafood is a significant pathway for human exposure. Earth system models suggest that mercury in marine ecosystems mainly comes from atmospheric wet and dry deposition of Hg(II), with a smaller contribution from gaseous Hg(0) uptake. Studies on marine Hg deposition and gas exchange are limited, but stable isotope measurements in Atlantic and Mediterranean seawater indicate a significant contribution of atmospheric Hg and gaseous elemental mercury uptake to ocean mercury levels.

The impacts of the atmospheric boundary layer on regional haze in North China

Summary: An intensive atmospheric boundary layer experiment was conducted on the North China Plain in 2019, discussing the impact of regional ABL structure on haze pollution and the relationship between ABL height and aerosol accumulation layer depth. Weak wind layers contribute to pollutant accumulation while low-level jets promote pollutant removal, resulting in uneven spatial distribution of haze in the region.

Characteristics, Seasonality, and Secondary Formation Processes of Diacids and Related Compounds in Fine Aerosols During Warm and Cold Periods: Year-Round Observations at Tianjin, North China

Peisen Li et al.

Summary: The study collected PM2.5 samples over a one-year period and investigated diacids, oxoacids, and alpha-dicarbonyls, revealing that water-soluble organic aerosols (OA) in Tianjin were mainly derived from fossil fuel combustion and biomass burning emissions with intensive photochemical processing in the atmosphere. The findings suggest that the formation and transformations of water-soluble OA were more effective in cold periods in aqueous phase, while gas phase played a bigger role in warm periods.

Mass-Independent Fractionation of Even and Odd Mercury Isotopes during Atmospheric Mercury Redox Reactions

Xuewu Fu et al.

Summary: This study reveals that oxidized Hg at high altitudes exhibits even isotopic fractionation characteristics, while rainfall Hg shows both even and odd isotopic fractionation, possibly due to photo-reduction of Hg-II in clouds. Observations of MIF in free tropospheric Hg-0 indicate that oxidation of Hg-0 in high-altitude air masses produces opposite even- and odd-MIF in Hg-0 and oxidized Hg-II.

Summary: The study found that the seasonal variations in TGM isotopic compositions and concentrations in 10 Chinese cities were likely controlled by land surface emissions with highly negative delta Hg-202 signatures, rather than atmospheric oxidation chemistry, vegetation activity, or residential coal combustion. The amplitudes of seasonal variations in TGM concentrations and Delta Hg-199 were significantly correlated with the simulated soil GEM emission flux.
