Noise-Reduced Quantitative Fluorine NMR Spectroscopy Reveals the Presence of Additional Per- and Polyfluorinated Alkyl Substances in Environmental and Biological Samples When Compared with Routine Mass Spectrometry Methods

Jeremy R. Gauthier et al.

Summary: Per- and polyfluorinated alkyl substances (PFAS) are commonly found in the environment. Analysis of PFAS using mass spectrometry often underestimates the total fluorine concentration. This study utilized F-19 NMR technique to accurately detect and quantify PFAS compounds in environmental and biological samples, revealing the presence of PFAS that were missed by routine mass spectrometric methods.

Revisiting pesticide pollution: The case of fluorinated pesticides

Diogo A. M. Alexzandrino et al.

Summary: Fluorinated pesticides have gained significant market share in the agrochemical sector due to the approval of new fluoroorganic ingredients in the past two decades. However, there is lack of a comprehensive scientific and regulatory framework to address their potential negative impacts. Further research and discussion are needed to differentiate between the safety and hazards associated with fluorinated pesticides.

Fluorine-containing agrochemicals in the last decade and approaches for fluorine incorporation

Qiang Wang et al.

Summary: This review describes the methodologies for fluorine incorporation of 40 fluorine-containing agrochemicals that have received an ISO name in the past decade. The predominant approach for fluorine introduction is through the use of fluorine-containing building blocks. The synthetic methods for hard-to-obtain fluorine-containing building blocks are specifically discussed. The main building blocks used include fluoroarenes, difluoromethylarenes, and trifluoromethylarenes, as well as fluorine-containing small molecules such as alcohols, amines, ketoesters, and olefins. The review also mentions the application of late-stage fluorination in the synthesis of the fungicide quinofumelin, and emphasizes the potential of these fluorine introduction methods in the development of new and economical pesticide synthetic routes.

Degradation of Sulfoxaflor in Water and Soil: Kinetics, Degradation Pathways, Transformation Product Identification, and Toxicity

Ya Yang et al.

Summary: This study systematically investigated the degradation behaviors of sulfoxaflor in water and soil, and explored the toxicity and pathways of its degradation products. The results showed that sulfoxaflor can undergo degradation through photolysis and soil degradation, but not through hydrolysis or photolysis in acidic water or sterilized soil. The study also identified four degradation products and assessed their toxicity. The findings provide a theoretical basis for the application and ecological risk assessment of sulfoxaflor.

Hydrolysis and photolysis of flupyradifurone in aqueous solution and natural water: Degradation kinetics and pathway

Nan Fang et al.

Summary: Laboratory experiments were conducted to investigate the degradation kinetics and pathways of the neonicotinoid pesticide Flupyradifurone (FPO) in water. The results showed that FPO was fairly stable under natural conditions but rapidly degraded under UV light. Direct photolysis was identified as the main degradation pathway. The study also proposed a plausible photolysis pathway based on the identified photoproducts.

Tracking Fluorine during Aqueous Photolysis and Advanced UV Treatment of Fluorinated Phenols and Pharmaceuticals Using a Combined 19F-NMR, Chromatography, and Mass Spectrometry Approach

Akash P. Bhat et al.

Summary: Fluorine incorporation into organic molecules has increased due to desirable changes in the molecular physiochemical properties. Photolysis of fluorinated compounds can lead to the formation of new fluorinated byproducts. Monitoring of product formation during photolysis of various fluorinated motifs is important due to the potential persistence and toxicity of these byproducts. 19F-NMR is a useful method to detect and quantify fluorine-containing species.

Adsorption - Desorption Behavior of Penoxsulam Herbicide on Soils with Different Characteristics

Vandita Pandey et al.

Summary: Laboratory studies were conducted to examine the adsorption-desorption behavior of penoxsulam herbicide in six different soils, revealing a significant correlation between soil properties, such as pH, and the behavior of the herbicide. Soil pH showed a high negative correlation with the partition coefficient of penoxsulam, while showing a positive correlation with its desorption in the soil. The Fourier transformed infrared spectral comparisons indicated that the adsorption of penoxsulam in soil involved H-bonding with polar moieties and complex reactions with transition metals present on soil exchange complex.

Summary: This study investigated the presence of unidentified organofluorine compounds (UOF) in environmental samples from lake Mjosa, river Alna, and sewage samples from Oslo. The findings revealed high concentrations of UOF in these samples, posing a potential health and environmental hazard due to their mostly unknown composition.

Mechanism, Kinetics, and Ecotoxicity Assessment of •OH-Initiated Oxidation Reactions of Sulfoxaflor

G. Manonmani et al.

Summary: The reaction mechanism and kinetics of sulfoxaflor initiated by the center dot OH were investigated using electronic structure calculations. It was found that hydrogen atom abstraction from the C7 carbon atom is the more favorable reaction pathway. The subsequent reactions of sulfoxaflor with other atmospheric reactive species were studied in detail, with the products identified potentially contributing to secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formation in the atmosphere.

Summary: The new sulfoximine insecticide sulfoxaflor could undergo degradation and transformation in soils and sediments, with potential impacts on aquatic organisms. Its photolytic half-life in surface waters may be too long to mitigate the acute toxicity to aquatic species.
