Ammonia-oxidizing archaea possess a wide range of cellular ammonia affinities

Man-Young Jung et al.

Summary: This study characterized the ammonia oxidation kinetic properties of 12 AOA, finding that Nitrosocosmicus species have the lowest affinity for ammonia and total ammonium among all characterized AOA. The substrate affinity of ammonia oxidizers is correlated with their cell surface area to volume ratios, and ammonia-not ammonium-is the substrate for the ammonia monooxygenase enzyme of AOA and comammox, which is similar to AOB.

What's the best way to achieve successful mainstream partial nitritation-anammox application?

Songkai Qiu et al.

Summary: The partial nitritation-anammox (PN-A) process offers a game-changing alternative for nitrogen removal in municipal wastewater treatment, with potential challenges including process instability, low nitrogen removal efficiency, and poor effluent quality at low temperatures, highlighting the importance of efficient anammox biomass retention for successful implementation.

Robust Nitritation Sustained by Acid-Tolerant Ammonia-Oxidizing Bacteria

Zhiyao Wang et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates a robust nitritation process in treating low-strength wastewater by cultivating acid-tolerant ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) under acidic conditions of pH 4.5-5.0. The dominance of Candidatus Nitrosoglobus in the nitrifying guild was identified through 16S rRNA gene sequencing, with the disappearance of typical activated sludge nitrifying microorganisms. The acid-tolerant Candidatus Nitrosoglobus was found to accumulate nitrite effectively under conditions inhibiting nitrite-oxidizing bacteria (NOB), leading to a stable and practical nitrogen removal process.

Inactivation kinetics of nitrite-oxidizing bacteria by free nitrous acid

Min Zheng et al.

Summary: Recent studies have shown that free nitrous acid (FNA) has biocidal effects on nitrite-oxidizing bacteria (NOB), significantly reducing active NOB concentration. The Weibull model can accurately describe the biocidal effect of FNA, facilitating the optimization of FNA conditions. However, long-term implementation of FNA-based technology may lead to issues of NOB adaptation.

Assessing the stability of one-stage PN/A process through experimental and modelling investigations

Jia Meng et al.

Summary: The study showed that biofilm thickness plays a critical role in controlling the process stability of the mainstream partial nitritation/anammox (PN/A) process against dissolved oxygen (DO) variation. Thinner biofilm thickness primarily decreased the in-situ consumption rate of nitrite, rather than ammonium, when DO increased. The joint contribution of biofilm thickness and DO concentration to PN/A process was revealed, with thin biofilm determining the optimal DO level for maximizing nitrogen removal efficiency and system robustness against DO variation.
