Heterotrophic nitrification and aerobic denitrification process: Promising but a long way to go in the wastewater treatment

Haipeng Xi et al.

Summary: Traditional biological nitrogen removal (BNR) involves sequential nitrification and denitrification, but in recent years, novel processes like anaerobic ammonia oxidation and comammox have gained attention. Among them, heterotrophic nitrification and aerobic denitrification (HN-AD) is particularly promising for one-stage nitrogen removal in the presence of organic carbon under aerobic conditions. This review focuses on the diversity, physiology, performance, challenges, and strategies of HN-AD bacteria.

Nitrite accumulation and impairment of N2O reduction explains contrasting soil denitrification phenotypes

Matthew P. Highton et al.

Summary: Soil denitrification contributes to N2O emissions, and the delayed reduction of N2O in certain soils can be attributed to delayed N2O reductase synthesis and impairment of N2O reduction by nitrite.

Hydroxylamine and the nitrogen cycle: A review

Aina Soler-Jofra et al.

Summary: Aerobic ammonium oxidizing bacteria have been identified more than 100 years ago, with hydroxylamine being known as an intermediate. Recent enzymatic evidence suggests that hydroxylamine is converted to NO and further to nitrite by an unknown enzyme. The nitrogen losses in the form of NO and N2O from three types of aerobic ammonium oxidizing microorganisms, as well as the inhibitory role of hydroxylamine on nitrite oxidizing bacteria, are still under investigation.

Biochar Mitigates N2O Emission of Microbial Denitrification through Modulating Carbon Metabolism and Allocation of Reducing Power

Yu Zhang et al.

Summary: Research showed that biochar has a direct impact on cellular-level denitrification metabolism, with particularly strong stimulative effects seen in corn straw biochar produced at 500 degrees Celsius. This stimulating effect is mainly attributed to the bulk particles of corn straw biochar directly regulating carbon metabolism, promoting the use of produced reducing power for nitrogen reduction and subsequently reducing the accumulation of N2O.
