Vertical microplastic distribution in sediments of Fuhe River estuary to Baiyangdian Wetland in Northern China

Zeyan Zhou et al.

Summary: The study on the vertical microplastic distribution in estuary sediment of Fuhe River in northern China revealed that microplastic content decreased with depth, with the highest content in the topmost sediment layer. The smaller particle size and higher proportion of colored microplastics were found in deeper sediment layers. The spatial distribution of microplastics in sediments was closely related to human activities, with higher content in areas with more intense human activities.

Spatio-temporal variation of microplastic along a rural to urban transition in a tropical river*

Hui Ling Chen et al.

Summary: Microplastic pollution is a global issue, with limited data available in tropical countries like Malaysia. Langat River in Malaysia showed that all water samples contained microplastics, mainly fibres, with concentrations directly related to river discharge. Continuous logging of turbidity sensors could improve estimates of microplastic loads in rivers.

New insights into the vertical distribution and microbial degradation of microplastics in urban river sediments

Lihua Niu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the vertical distribution of microplastics and the bacterial community assemblages in urban river sediments. The results showed that microplastics and associated microbial communities have vertical profiles in river sediments. The indicative plastic-degrading bacteria significantly increased in abundance and centrality from shallow to deep layers, suggesting a primary role in the degradation of microplastics in deep sediments.

Microplastic Mass Concentrations and Distribution in German Bight Waters by Pyrolysis-Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry/Thermochemolysis Reveal Potential Impact of Marine Coatings: Do Ships Leave Skid Marks?

Christopher Dibke et al.

Summary: This study is the first large-scale survey of microplastics in the German Bight, revealing spatial, temporal, and potential source variations of microplastics in marine environments. The main source of microplastics is hypothesized to be marine (antifouling) coating particles from ships, rather than common packaging waste.

Neglected microplastics pollution in global COVID-19: Disposable surgical masks

Maocai Shen et al.

Summary: With the outbreak and spread of COVID-19 globally, disposable surgical masks have become widely used, but irresponsible disposal of masks can lead to significant microplastic pollution. Masks can release a large amount of microplastic fibers, and the addition of organic solvents as well as weathering can increase the release of microplastics.

Microplastics in freshwater and wild fishes from Lijiang River in Guangxi, Southwest China

Lishan Zhang et al.

Summary: The study found that microplastics in the Lijiang River are dominated by large-sized flakes and fibers, present in both freshwater and wild fishes. The most abundant polymer types in freshwater were polypropylene-polyethylene copolymer and polyethylene, while polyethylene terephthalate dominated in wild fishes.

Summary: This study investigated a freshwater wetland system in Eastern India and found a high concentration of microplastics and toxic metals in treatment ponds and associated wastewater canals. The presence of microplastics poses a risk to aquatic biota, with potential contamination of fish. The removal efficiency of microplastics in the treatment ponds was estimated to be 53%.

Summary: The study investigated the occurrence of microplastics (MPs) in inshore and offshore surface waters of the southern Caspian Sea. The data showed that MPs were widely distributed in the thirteen studied stations, with non-normally distribution observed among the stations. The average concentration of microplastics in the selected stations was 0.246 +/- 0.020 MP/m(3).

Summary: The study found that microplastic content decreased significantly during the treatment process in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), but still widely existed in influent, effluent, and sludge. Fibers were the predominant type of microplastics, and the tertiary industry was identified as the main contributor of microplastics to WWTPs.

Distribution and Influence on the Microbial Ecological Relationship of Antibiotic Resistance Genes in Soil at a Watershed Scale

Yi-Long Hao et al.

Summary: The study found that ARGs were widespread in soils along the Taipu River, with varying profiles based on land use types but showing regional similarities. These characteristics were primarily determined by antibiotic input and ARG transmission mediated by MGEs, with toxic metals, PAHs, and soil properties contributing to ARG distribution in that order. The relationship between microbial ecology changed significantly with the enrichment of ARGs, impacting the watershed scale, where Transposon IS1247 was identified as an indicator of ARGs' impact on microbial ecology in the Taipu River Basin soils.
