Effects of environmental factors on soil bacterial community structure and diversity in different contaminated districts of Southwest China mine tailings

Bohan Wu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the ecological effects of environmental factors on bacterial communities around pyrite mine tailings. The results showed that most samples were contaminated by multiple metals, with soil pH, bacteria abundance, and diversity increasing with the distance from the tailings. Various factors such as invertase, acid phosphatase, total organic carbon, pH, and specific metals were found to influence the bacterial community composition.

Patterns in utilization of carbon sources in soil microbial communities contaminated with mine solid wastes from San Luis Potosi, Mexico

Angeles Martinez-Toledo et al.

Summary: This study in San Luis Potosi, Mexico, revealed high contamination levels of arsenic and heavy metals in soils from Cerro de San Pedro and Villa de la Paz, with implications for the metabolic activity and soil functions due to a combined effect of physicochemical characteristics, arsenic, and heavy metals. The research also found a selective uptake of substrate groups by microbial communities, with correlations between contamination indexes and specific chemical compounds.

Distinction between Cr and other heavy-metal-resistant bacteria involved in C/N cycling in contaminated soils of copper producing sites

Juan Zhang et al.

Summary: Through studying typical copper-producing provinces in China, it was found that 90% of sampling sites were heavily polluted with multiple heavy metals, while soil heterogeneity and mutual interference of multimetals are obstacles in exploring bacterial resistance pathways in contaminated field soils. By analyzing contamination indices and bioindicators, along with multivariate statistical models, it was discovered that different types of heavy metals affect antioxidant enzyme activity, urease-induced precipitation of heavy metals, and excretion of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) in the soil.

Optimization of an Autochthonous Bacterial Consortium Obtained from Beach Sediments for Bioremediation of Petroleum Hydrocarbons

Rafaela Perdigao et al.

Summary: This study aims to develop an autochthonous hydrocarbon-degrading consortium and optimize growth conditions for effective hydrocarbon bioremediation. Results showed that bioaugmentation with inoculum pre-grown in acetate demonstrated the highest hydrocarbons degradation efficiency of 66%, highlighting the potential for using alternative carbon sources for bacterial biomass growth in response to oil spills.

Nutrient supplementation experiments with saltern microbial communities implicate utilization of DNA as a source of phosphorus

Zhengshuang Hua et al.

Summary: In hypersaline environments, microbial communities use DNA primarily as a phosphorus source, requiring other sources of carbon and nitrogen for substantial growth. The taxonomic composition of eDNA in the water column changes depending on the availability of inorganic phosphorus or supplied DNA, indicating preferential uptake of eDNA from specific organismal sources. Substantial shifts in the taxonomic composition and diversity of microcosm communities occur due to preferential eDNA consumption and differential growth under various nutrient availability regimes, suggesting microbial community assembly in salterns is driven by available resources, including eDNA.
