Recent progress on the thermal treatment and resource utilization technologies of municipal waste incineration fly ash: A review

Binbin Huang et al.

Summary: Incineration is a promising approach for municipal solid waste disposal, but the resulting fly ash poses urgent problems. This paper analyzes the current situation and technologies for the hazard-free treatment and resourceful utilization of municipal solid waste incineration fly ash (MSWI-FA). Various thermal detoxification technologies and resource utilization methods are reviewed. The focus is on decomposing organic pollutants and stabilizing heavy metals through high-temperature processes. The paper emphasizes the importance of utilizing the physico-chemical characteristics of MSWI-FA for value-added utilization and promoting the safe and effective treatment of MSWI-FA for green and sustainable city development.

Heavy metal leaching behaviour and long-term environmental risk assessment of cement-solidified municipal solid waste incineration fly ash in sanitary landfill

Qin Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the leaching characteristics of different heavy metals in cement-solidified MSWIFA blocks and established mechanical models to estimate the long-term environmental risk. The results showed that the leaching of lead was controlled by diffusion, while the leaching of copper, chromium, arsenic, and nickel was mainly controlled by surface wash-off and diffusion.

Summary: By replacing part of the phosphorus element with sulfur, optimizing the constituent phases ratio of modified sulfphoaluminate cement (SAC), and adding excessive Fe2O3 and P2O5, the mechanical properties, ability to solidify chloride ions, and resistance to marine erosion of SAC were improved. Excessive Fe2O3 and P2O5 contributed to the enhancement of compressive strength and resistance to chloride ions solidification and marine erosion.

Thermal cotreatment of municipal solid waste incineration fly ash with sewage sludge: Phases transformation, kinetics and fusion characteristics, and heavy metals solidification

Xiaoqing Lin et al.

Summary: Thermal treatment is an effective method to detoxify municipal solid waste incineration fly ash and produce secondary materials for recycling. Co-treating fly ash with sewage sludge can reduce energy consumption and control heavy metals leaching, significantly lowering ash fusion temperatures and increasing removal efficiency of chlorine. This method also effectively solidifies heavy metals into minerals or aluminosilicates, meeting standards for construction material use in China.

Summary: This study optimized the FLUWA process at the MSWI plant Linth, Switzerland by determining ideal process parameters for optimal metal recovery. Laboratory and industrial-scale experiments were conducted to adjust the process towards a more efficient leaching of Zn, Pb, Cu, and Cd, achieving improved recovery rates. It was found that the leaching pH of 3.8 and stability influenced by the L/S-ratio significantly impacted the process.

Summary: Thermal plasma treatment is a promising method for fly ash disposal. Experimental results show that the formation temperature of vitrified slag can be reduced during co-treatment, and the CaO content in raw materials is related to the volatilization of Cd and Pb. A high Al2O3 content is beneficial for retaining Cr, Cu, and Ni in slags.

Thermal cotreatment of municipal solid waste incineration fly ash with sewage sludge for PCDD/Fs decomposition and reformation suppression

Summary: Thermal treatment effectively decomposed PCDD/Fs in all samples to a level meeting the reutilization criterion of 50 ng WHO-TEQ g-1. Cleavage of the oxygen bridge was identified as the primary decomposition pathway. Compared to mono-treating FA, cotreating FA with SS resulted in a better CaO-Al2O3-SiO2 ternary system for vitrification and effectively suppressed the reformation of PCDD/Fs in offgases with inhibition efficiencies up to 96%.
