Potential human health risks due to environmental exposure to nano-and microplastics and knowledge gaps: A scoping review

Arifur Rahman et al.

Summary: Microplastics are an emerging global environmental contaminant that may have negative impacts on human health through various pathways such as metabolic disturbances, neurotoxicity, and increased cancer risk. Currently, little is known about the effects of microplastics on human health, and further research is needed to quantify their impacts and pathogenesis.

Optimisation of the lipid extraction of fresh black soldier fly larvae (Hermetia illucens) with 2-methyltetrahydrofuran by response surface methodology

Ruben Smets et al.

Summary: Black soldier fly larvae have the potential to be a renewable industrial feedstock, and in this study, the green solvent 2-methyltetrahydrofuran (2-MeTHF) was compared with hexane for extracting lipids from fresh BSFL. The results showed that 2-MeTHF could extract more lipids compared to hexane, and the wet extraction method was able to extract a similar amount of lipids compared to the Soxhlet extraction.

Chemical safety of black soldier fly larvae (Hermetia illucens), knowledge gaps and recommendations for future research: a critical review

S. Lievens et al.

Summary: Black soldier fly larvae are a promising protein source for the feed industry, but their chemical safety must be ensured. Research indicates that the composition of their rearing substrate is a crucial factor for safety, as it may introduce risks of bioaccumulation of various (in)organic compounds. Further investigation is needed to determine the potential risks of hazardous chemicals and ensure the safe exploitation of BSFL.

Use and misuse of FTIR spectroscopy for studying the bio-oxidation of plastics

Christophe Sandt et al.

Summary: Plastics have become a persistent source of pollution due to massive production and long lives, while biodegradation is explored as an environmentally friendly remediation method. Using FTIR spectroscopy to measure the oxidation levels of plastics requires careful consideration of potential biomass contamination.

Nanoplastic sizes and numbers: quantification by single particle tracking

Robert Molenaar et al.

Summary: The existing methods for quantifying nanoplastics lack a cost-effective and semi-automated approach for high-throughput analysis. This study demonstrates the combination of sensitive fluorescence video microscopy, NileRed staining, and single particle tracking for counting and sizing nanoplastics. The results show promise for quantifying sizes and concentrations of nanoplastics in consumer and medical plastics, as well as environmental samples.
