Emission of Dioxin-like Compounds and Flame Retardants from Commercial Facilities Handling Deca-BDE and Their Downstream Sewage Treatment Plants

Go Suzuki et al.

Summary: Commercial mixtures of decabromodiphenyl ether (deca-BDE) contain not only polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and dioxin-like compounds (DLCs), but also pose significant risks to aquatic organisms. While the inclusion of deca-BDE in the Stockholm Convention list of persistent organic pollutants is expected to reduce PBDF concentrations, other DLCs and alternative flame retardants are still likely to be discharged. Strong hydrophobic compounds are effectively removed by current wastewater treatment in Japan, but weaker compounds may still pose a risk.

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers in the environmental systems: a review

Chinemerem Ruth Ohoro et al.

Summary: PBDEs are human-influenced chemicals commonly used as flame retardants, with environmental persistence and bioaccumulation potential. They can travel long distances through air and water, primarily residing in sediments in aquatic environments. Different congeners prevail in environmental samples compared to human tissues.
